Enter from China, exit tio Thailand

I am wondering whether it is yet possible to enter Myanmar from China and exit by some Thai border? Can this be done alone without taking a package tour? How much time can I expect to stay in Myanmar? Thanks!

You cannot enter Burma from China except as a part of an expensive tour. While it is possible to exit to Thailand, it is awkward and costly, involving permits and required guides. Best option is to fly in, fly out. The visa is for 28 days.

as above...to exit via land you would have to fly from central Myanmar to Kengtung or Taichilek...and you would need the special MTT permit to exit that way, and this permit seems much harder to get than it was a couple years ago. Much easier, and probably cheaper, to fly Airasia back to Thailand.

According to the info of the embassy you have to leave at the same border place as you entered. They might hold your passport at that border place, to be sure.

I am looking at a trip from Hong Kong to Rangoon in December. Overland from Dali in Yunnan to North Burma seems to be a great hassle.

Consider this possibility if you are in Yunnan - there is a cheap China Eastern (good airline which I have used on many occasions) fare from Kunming to Mandalay for about $US 30 for a 90 min journey. This is far cheaper than flying to Bangkok and then to Rangoon on Air Asia.

Plenty of possibilities from Burma to Thailand by air.

the flight from Kunming to Mandalay is a option for getting China to Myanmar...I looked at that option to get from Myanmar to Yunnan in Feb....but I think you forgot a 0 from the price...it is more like $300 or more....not $30.
It worked out cheaper for me to fly to Thailand then overland from there via nth Laos to Jinghong in Yunnan.
And no of course they do not keep your passport at the border...as above...you could fly from Yunnan to Myanmar, and then fly from Myanmar to Bangkok.

Sorry to hijack your topic Nomadmic, but we have questions on the same subject.

Does anyone know of any agencies that maybe offer a Ruili to Lashio tour? We are a couple looking at going to Myanmar from China in the next few weeks, so it's too late to get cheap air tickets. Maybe a tour for 2 people might work out a bit cheaper and be more interesting, if it's possible of course.

According to the Myanmar embassy in China's website, it is possible with a 'package tour visa'. Is it possible to get this kind of visa but just use a tour from Ruili to Lashio? We'll know more when we get to Kunming, but it would be nice to get some info before.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I just checked again on the China Eastern website - chose a day in July at random -and it came up with $HK 480 one way. This is about $US60.

The prices on the China Eastern website don't include about $HK700 airport tax.

juliesam...from what I understand the 2 of you would be the 'package tour' and once you reached Lashio you could be on your own..IE..the tour/guide would just go from Ruili to Lashio...could be wrong tho...suss it out when you get to Kunming.

Hi,
Thanks for the info. We can't seem to find any firsthand info from people who have crossed the border recently. We'll give it a go and post on TT how it goes. We've got 30+ hours of train to get to Kunming first as we are in Xining waiting to go to Tibet, but with the crazy permit rules we've had to change our plans.

For anyone interested, the travel agencies in Kunming told us that the border between China and Myanmar is still closed for foreigners.

Thanks! You have all been helpful. Maybe I'll wait a few years until things get easier and less expensive.
