over to Gallup NM via Sedona
up to Ouray, Colorado
over to Vail via Grand Junction
I dont know much about Gallup but it's the only town between Sedona and anything in Colorado. Ouray has some good recommendations on this site and Vail sounds awesome. Any other recommendation here?

1I would suggest you spend each night this way, for most scenic value per day:
1 Las Vegas
2 Flagstaff (after the Grand Canyon and a side trip to Sedona)
3 Cortez (after Monument Valley and Mesa Verde NP)
4 Vail (after Telluride / Ouray and Gunnison, Grand Junction)
Here is a Google Mud Map. And what time of year is this - winter can be an issue on some of the roads.

9Cortez is a convenient stop place, immediately after Monument Valley and Mesa Verde NP (both wonderful) - that's all. It's nothing special as a town, but gives you a great day through the Rockies the next day.
And the Zion-Bryce-Capitol Reef-Arches alternative is also very scenic ... you're spoilt for choice.

11Follow #3 if you prefer the desert National Parks. I prefer spending the night in Durango rather than in Cortez or Ouray. Drive Highway #550 from Durango through Silverton over the Million Dollar Highway down to Ouray, then straight north to Grand Junction. Telluride is a short detour west after you drive through Ouray (you would need to drive there and retrace your route back to #550). Gunnison is one hour/60 miles east on Highway #50 from Highway #550, and you would not have the time for the extra 120 miles RT unless you decide to continue driving east on Highway #50 and then north on Interstate-25, or take one of the shortcuts from Poncha Springs northeast to Denver. Otherwise, from Grand Junction, take Interstate-70 straight east past Rocky Mountain National Park, Aspen, and Vail to Denver.

12I was hesitant about suggesting the Million Dollar Highway until the OP advised what time of year they were doing this. I agree that Durango is a much more pleasant town than Cortez, however I was just minimising the trip from Mesa Verde NP through to Montrose, via Telluride and Ouray ... given the short time available.
Also - I was using shorthand for the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park - not far off US550, and we found it spectacular. But whatever OP - I think any of these variations are better than travelling through Gallup and then into Colorado from the south.
