Vienna to Venice by bus?

Hello!

I'm doing a month long backpacking trip to Europe this summer and am currently trying to look at transportation from Vienna to Venice. We're trying to do the trip on a budget, so was looking for cheapest route. What I found so far is bus, but it gets me to Venice-Mestre.... which seems to be 20 some km from Venice?? Is this true and if so, is there a cheap way from there to Venice itself? If so, or even if not, is there a better way? Please help!!

I think there is a 8-11 hr train from Vienna to Venice for around $100. If you take an overnight train it will be $10-70 more depending on what seat/bed you get but it saves precious time in the country!

Hope this helped.

Mestre to Venice you take a train and it will cost about 3 euro's. As 1 suggest take a train from Vienna direct to Venice if you book in advance with oebb.at you can get fares for as little as 29 euro's.

Hi,
go here and enter Wien as starting point and Venedig Santa Lucia as destination. I can find train tickets from 29 € for July, so if you're travelling in summer, I'm sure you'll find something. Bought on the day of travelling tickets are roughly 70 €.

Mestre, on the mainland, is 10 kms max from Venice Santa Lucia train station, the trip takes around 10 mins, if that, and costs just a couple of euros. Agree with others that the train from Vienna to Venice is a much better option than bus.

Yeah we have the same issue. we were looking at flights but they're asking for 500 euros for a 1hr trip. Crazy. Then theres the bus but we found the overnight train much more suitable. Book a sleeper and it includes breakfast, newspaper and even like a personal assistant or something (thats what i understand anyway). plus the time your sleeping your travelling so two bird with one stone (as the saying goes). Its well worth the money.

Thanks for all of the info!! (I thought I responded, but apparently it didn't link!) We've decided on the train overnight. Now we're just trying to determine if Eurail pass is worth it? We're traveling 8 countries in a month, most of which are bordering (Belgium, Netherlands, France, Italy, Austria, Czech Rep).... I am confused by the Eurail pass and am not sure the 5 days in 2 months would be in our best interest? Would it cover these countries listed above? It definitely looks like the individual trips would cost more than what a Eurail pass would, but just not sure these countries are covered and counted as all bordering? Any advice?
