Google "narathiwat violence". Unreal what pops up. This place, along with Pattani, Yala and Songkla are the major problems areas. I read the Thai news pretty much every day. Bombs, killings, school burnings, etc. are a very common occurrence.

They were targetting teachers for a while there, but not farang ones, so far!

It's been a sad situation in Southern Thailand for a long time now. A real pity, given that it has spectacular scenery, great seafood, etc. Thais in Bangkok and in the north just don't trust the southerners.

What kind of work will you be doing? Do you have a choice of cities to work in? Do you have a real job lined up with a real salary or one of those "I am writing my memoirs or another "War and Peace novel" or "I gamble online" type of job? In other words can you do your same job in another city that doesn't have the problems you have in the southern border regions?

Are you Thai or Malaysian and have family in this area you want to be close to? I have no problem passing through this part of Thailand, I personally have no problem staying a night or two in this area but I would not live there! Harder to hit a moving target than one who is there all the time!

Assuming you are a Farang, do you have a real job where your employer handles your visa and work permits are you working under the table with a tourist visa? There are other places in Thailand where you can work under the table on a tourist visa and in a city with less fear of being blown up on purpose or by accident.

Stay away from it,find other spots to settle own. Even locals avoid going to that area.
