Overland travel from India through Burma to Thailand

I'm looking to head back to SE Asia again in October but before hand am thinkin of starting maybe in India.

Is it possible to land cross through Burma from India all the way to Thailand via land as I'm very much opposed to flying while I'm back packing.

Does anyone know the current situation with the newly elected government in Burma in relation to border crossings or has anyone done this before?

Thinking of starting in Kolkata and onto Burma then to Chiang Mai. Giving myself 6 weeks to be in Thailand. I suppose if it's too difficult or risky I'll just come back to India another time but would enjoy starting my travels there before indulging in the ever intense new years party on Koh Phangan.

Cheers

No. Same. Fly from Bangkok to Yangon is best bet.

You'll have to wait a few more years.

you will have t fly Kolkuta to Yangon and then Yangon to BKK no way can you avoid flying, as Henning says you can go through Pakistan the Krakroam highway to China and then onto Kumming and down into Laos. Migh be easier to grit your teeth and fly, which is worthwhile

Cheers for the responses!

Could it be worth even just going to the border crossings and having a go? There must be a way! Admittedly inadvisable to do so but is there 0% chance this is possible or just very very unlikely to be a possibility?

Well you could apply for the permits for the northeastern provinces but chances are the low level insurgencies there will prevent the Indian government from giving you the permits.

Yeah, agree with N, you won't get near the border.

Madras to Port Klang or Singapore by freighter if you can find one, expensive.
