3There have been several recent discussions on accommodation in BL on this forum, less for DT but you cannot go wrong with Carolinas in Tuk Tuk. You may want to the LP guide book but you can also download the Sumatra chapter too. You can take public buses or relatively cheap shared taxi/minibuses. When you get to where you are staying then other trips can be arranged (in BL guides will call into your guest house). Another place to think of in North Sumatra is Tangkahan.

4You don't need any travel agent.
Samosir Villa Resort is nice, although not as nice as the website makes it look http://www.samosirvillaresort.com/
If possible stay away from the pool, it's quite noisy early in the morning.

We are just back from Sumatra where we backpacked the north over a period of 60 days. Public transport is plentiful, locals are very helpful and the food is simply great. You won’t need any travel agency (the only exception: for the booking of domestic flights you need a local credit card, but any travel agency will do the booking for you). Find many details about transport, accommodation, and prices etc. in our travel notes on Sumatra and enjoy it:
