Key West house rentalLooking for a house to rent for a week in July. Prefer older, indigenous house rental to condo or B&b. Something small will be perfect, walking distance to destination points, but not necessarily in the thick of it. Any ideas on how to find accommodation like this. I don't quite trust usual real estate site descriptions. Thanks so much for input!

2Florida and especially the Keys have laws limiting what they term "transient rental" of homes and have continued to tighten enforcement over the past 10 years. So you need to use sites like vrbo or realtors to find legitimate short-term rental properties.
Law and a decision to leave it in-force is mentioned in a 2011 article here

You are ruling out the obvious answer. Why are you willing to trust amateurs more than pros? You can Google the hell out of your question. You can see what is offered and what it costs from many different sites. Any real estate agent who varies significantly from the average is to be avoided.
In the Keys "older, indigenous" imply a greater chance of termites, wet rot, mold, and cucarachas. The Florida Keys are a subtropical jungle. The "classic" Florida Keys wood frame construction of 80 years ago only had to last until the next hurricane. Its main function was to keep the rain off you.
Anything "decent" near Duval St. is already a B&B.
All you will do in the house is sleep. Why can't it be a condo rental? You can't go to the Keys, rent a house or a condo, and be on a "tight" budget.
Enjoy your stay.

6"Amateur guests" aren't always disintereted parties. They can have their own grudges to bear (e.g., had a dispute-- legitimate or not-- with the realtor or other party renting out the place), and as anyone who uses Tripadvisor.com (or sees some threads on TT) knows, what are supposedly simply objective user reviews can be done by competitors of the establishment being reviewed. Someone recommending a particular house to rent could even have a financial interest in it, even if they don't say that.
That said, realtor ads, like hotel ads, highlight the best about a place (surprise--just promos for movies, CDs, etc.) and are merely a starting point specifying size, amenities, price, location, etc. The idea of an "indigenous" house is interesting. Native American dwellings for rent? OP doesn't mention budget or size, etc. Sure hope they specify air conditioning as a must.
