Short Surabaya - Mt Bromo Trip

Hi,

I am planning a short weekend get away from 18 May 2012, Friday (landing at Surabaya airport 255pm) to 21 May 2012, Monday (departs Surabaya airport 335pm).

Upon reaching Surabaya, I would get a motorbike from Javabikers.com. By the time I settle the administration, it should be too late for me to ride so I would spend the night at Surabaya.

On 19 May 2012, Saturday, I would ride to Mt Bromo area where I would spend 2 nights until 21 May, Monday morning when I would ride back to Surabaya for my flight home.

During my stay at Mt Bromo area, I would probably go for Mt Bromo sunrise, visit viewpoint 2 (trail from Cemoro Lawang to Mount Penanjakan) and visit viewpoint1 (Mount Penanjakan).

Does the above sound feasible?

Is it mandatory to have a guide in Mt Bromo?

Any tips and advice?

Thanks!

Hi...
I did Bromo last month, started from Surabaya also.
The plan was do trekking to viewpoint 2, information we got before that it was fine to do by private transportation.
Firstly thought was ..we did by private car until the half way (the good road).
Everything was changed,,locals there were not allowed us to do that by our own car, they told us that it was forbidden to do by private transport.

So we did trekking from the earlier starting point (before cemara indah hotel)
Thanks

are you taking one of the guided motorcycle tours of javabikers or just renting the bike and driving by yourself?
you should be aware that the surabaya-probolinggo road is horribly busy and not very motorcycle friendly (you'll be battling with big busses and trucks)
so consider carefully
once you'll reach the turn-off for bromo, driving will become more fun though
it's definitely feasible in your time-frame
and no, a guide there is not mandatory

Oh, no private transport? That means I have to find a hotel around Cemara Indah and park my bike there?

I am just renting a bike from javabikers. Yes, I will be careful and would try to leave very early on Saturday.

Hiiiii
19 May 2012 you will depart from Surabaya to Bromo morning you may take around 3-4 hours. I ever knew there was a cross bike tour using a special machine to Bromo. You can rest there. dated 20 May 2012 you can ride your bike to Pananjakan, Bromo. My advice carefully, because if you want to enjoy the sunrise, the way you are going through without illumination. I recommend following the jeep that will go towards Pananjakan. 21 May 2012 morning to go to Surabaya airport.
Good Luck!

I have friend working at Bromo tourism office,,he told me that it was fine to do by private car to penanjakan 2.
Practically..locals stopped us and insist to use jeep, motorbike, or horse.
So we did the top of penanjakan by walk..also walked to reach Mt.Bromo trough the sand sea from penanjakan 2.
Advice:
Go to the top of penanjakan 2, it will be less people. Just find a way next to sunrise viewing spot (it will be crowded there).
Look out what you could get from Penanjakan top here

As said the road from Suabaya to Bromo is NOT very good in places and by car with good shocks and a knowlegeable driver it took us 2.5 hours back to the airport. If it is a weekend day it may be every bit of 4 hours. Can you look into a tour and cost, but check reliability maybe on Lonely Planet search, so that they do not have you waiting 2-4 hours after your arrival at Surabaya before they leave for Bromo. You really do not need a guide a Bromo but you need to arrange transport at Bromo when you arrive for transport to sunrise at 4 AM. It should not cost more than $7-10 USD. Based on your timing the sunset can be very pretty as well.

I kind of enjoy walking. So I am thinking of parking the motorcycle at a hotel and spend 2 days in Mt Bromo area walking. Is it too much time? I am alone and tend to finish things rather quick. Are there any nearby places I can visit on a motorcycle?

The best I've tried is left of cemara(pine) hotel at 2 am, walking through the desert in the dark, the air is so fresh and clean the lungs from polluted air of urban air. In order not to get lost please follow stakes that are provided as a direction in the morning dark. The fog was so thick and you are not aware only 3 feet of having been in front of a temple at the foot of Bromo. After that go to the top of Bromo through a very long staircase. At about 3 am, the sunrise in the east is so beautiful. Pink red yellow blue sky. But you should walk away with some people for security reasons. Mount a horse or jeep will eliminate the sensation of a foggy desert in the dark. Then rent a car or a horse on your way back home. And do not be surprised at the full stretch of sand with the remain goods of the horse. But overall its one of my best bromo sensation during travel.

2 Days are enough to discover mount Bromo around, what we did last month was walking to the top of Penanjakan 2, walking trough the local cabbage field, acrossing the sand sea, and hike up to Mt.Batok ( Mount close to Bromo). We could see nice view of the entire Bromo. We did all those thing in a day, started walking from 3 am and finished at noon. Because we cant stand walking anymore, we canceled to go Savanna, Mt.Widodaren, and Madakaripura waterfall., also we did not had more time.
With your 2 days,, You could explore the whole bromo area.

Javabikers told me they no longer rent out motorbikes but only offer bike tours. Anybody knows any alternatives?

Hi.
I give u some suggestion for your travelling w/ moto.
It's good route if u get Pananjakan 1 from Tosari, Pasuruan, it's more easy than Cemorolawang, Probolinggo (n u have to across sand sea, but no from Tosari), cos the road is very steep.
Then u can get mount Bromo n Pananjakan 2 easily.
U can visit Savana w/ your bike also.
I ever did.
Or u can park your moto on the hotel then walking 2 Pananjakan 2 (4 km), Pananjakan 1 (2 km from Pananjakan 2), then go down 2 sand sea n Bromo. U can visit Savana (4 km from Bromo) by walking also.
Good luck.
