Actually Ciglre, a friend told me Ubud is a lot more expensive than other areas of Bali, do you think this is so.

It is more touristy, therefore yes, it is in general a bit more expensive. In particular during the high season, when prices of hotels / guesthouses increase quite a lot (but it is the same in other touristy areas on the island, such as Kuta).
I would say that you can still find reasonably priced hotels and guesthouses (esp. if you book in advance). I did not find eating out expensive at all - you can have a nice meal for under 5-6 USD (but I do not drink alcohol!) in simple but clean restaurants.
Excursions do NOT have to be expensive.... you can organise all by yourself: hire a driver (of course you need to negotiate the price down!!!!) and share the car with other travellers (if you are travelling alone).

Not sure what your budget is, but when I was volunteering at BARC I spent approx 85-90 USD a week for food and accommodation (but I stayed at the accommodation offered by BARC, which is quite cheap and I cooked most meals at home).

Thansk Ciglre that all sounds reasonable to me. It doesn't sound over priced as my friend told me. Also as you said Kuta and all those places go up in the high season too.
