the ferries are coming and going for 24 hours a day, just show up in the harbour and get the next one, fare is only 36.000 rp
and make sure you grab a nice n cheap seafood lunch in one of the many little seafront restaurants in padangbai before you depart!
After that it was a fairly pleasant journey - try to get a seat on the outside of the ferry - the space inside gets taken up quickly with families who spread their belongings out over a mat and then go to sleep. We bought snacks and coffees from the vendors just before the ferry left the port, and that was enough for us, even though it was quite a long journey.
We have guests at the moment that spent a day getting to us from Kuta Bali on the shuttlebus/ferry and paid Rp250,000 per person. They are flying back and th flights cost pretty much the same. They have the extra cost of airport transfer but thats between 3 of them and for them they wish they knew how cheap it was to fly before they spent a day of their holiday travelling.
Also it is not worth taking the fast boats if you are coming to Kuta, Lombok. Again we have guests at the moment who paid more for the fast boat than a flight and the fast boats dock up in the north. 2.5/3 hours away. The airport is only 20/30minutes from Kuta. They paid Rp700,000 for a car to bring them down to Kuta.Too much but even the usual price of Rp350,000makes that route more expensive than flying.
Ferry from P. Bai (Bali) to Lembar (Lombok). Departs every 1.5 hours is available 24 hours. It cost IDR 36,000, / Pax, for about 4 hours. Ferry on the experience you can sit in an air conditioned cabin, if there are such facilities. You can sit on the upper deck. Slow but quite pleasant, especially the reserve the low budget and have a long time.
Good Luck!

The bemo drivers in Lembar are a pain, but you can avoid the hassle by buying a combined ticket to your destination. See: www.peramatour.com.
You can also avoid the porters at Padang Bai and Lembar, by carrying all your own luggage.

We had a terrible experience on this ferry, where some porters working for a ticket-seller just grabbed our bags and carried them onto the ferry, then tried to intimidate us into giving them huge tips. We stood our ground though, and when I told them just to cancel the whole thing and we'd buy the tickets from somewhere else, they gave up and left us alone. After that it was a fairly pleasant journey - try to get a seat on the outside of the ferry - the space inside gets taken up quickly with families who spread their belongings out over a mat and then go to sleep. I would look at where you will be departing rom in Bali and where you want to go in Lombok. We have guests at the moment that spent a day getting to us from Kuta Bali on the shuttlebus/ferry and paid Rp250,000 per person. sure you can just hop around flying in airplanes, fast and efficient for sure, but i think big part of the indonesian experience is the actual travelling, on local transport and local ferries, and meeting local people...i for one enjoy the slow and cheap and adventurous way of this kind of travel, i don't feel at all that it is a wasted day of a holiday as you imply...quite the contrary in fact!7
The 'Putri Gianyar' takes - 3.5 hours, whereas others are around 5 hours. Like the slow boat to China, the ferry is a relaxing trip if the sea is calm. Agree with #6 on this one. Soak up the experience. As some bard of the highways and byways once said: "Travel: it's not about the destination man; it's about the trip."8
I was stating that our guests felt it a wasted day as they are from Europe on only a 2 week holiday. With limited time I can think of a lot more things I would like to be doing in Lombok than sitting on a ferry. That being said personally I did the ferry trip myself twice last week as we went back to Bali for a ceremony. But I have plenty f time and little money.9

Mimpi, could you give us a update about the new airport. And to the best of your best knowledge the various forms of transport and prices one could get to Kuta Lombok.14
I took the public ferry from Padang Bai to Lembar last month. The fare was Rp 36,000. I was a pleasant trip. I sat around a circular table on the top deck. It was covered but not enclosed. I chatted with the other passengers. There were good views of Gunung Agung. The bemo drivers in Lembar are a pain, but you can avoid the hassle by buying a combined ticket to your destination.
