Motorbiking from Phnom Penh to Chiang Mai
Hey there! Will be moving to Phnom Penh for a few months soon, but need to head back to Chiang Mai for a week for a workshop. Was thinking I would rent or buy a bike in Phnom Penh....is it feasible to motorbike up to Chiang Mai in about three days? Would it be enjoyable/safe? And can I cross borders on my own on a bike? I won't be in Thailand for more than a week so the visa isn't an issue.
Thanks!
Anna

You want to cover 1600 km in three days? That's not impossible, but it's some pretty hard riding on a small bike, 7 or 8 hours a day. Then you'd have to turn around and come back. You can get specific advice (especially about the border-crossing issue) at Golden Triangle Rider.

Rented bike can't cross borders, but if you buy one and have the ownership papers it should be ok. Main problem with your plan is time/distance. Presuming it will be a smallish 125cc bike it would be a real strain to make 500km/day. Then you have to turn around and do it all over again back to PP - exhausting! I've done some long distances small bike rides in Thailand and Laos and usually plan on doing at most 200-300km/day. If you get a bigger bike capable of higher average speed you'll still probably be riding all day every day. For a bike trip of this distance I'd prefer to have about 10-12 days. Last trip from Bangkok to Chiang Mai (home) took 2 very long days and we arrived late at night day-2. I would re-think.
