Sorrento and Amalfi Coast (our plan)Hello all,
We are planning to visit the Sorrento and Amalfi coast area early/mid June 2012.
We will arrive evening of 7th June and leave late 11th June. Total 4 days in the region
Our plan is as follows:
A) Two days - we plan to base ourselves in Sorrento
See - Sorrento, Pompeii, Capri island and nearby.
B) Then for another two days – base ourselves either amalfi or Positano
see – Amalfi , positano and the coast region
1) Is our plan appropriate? Would you recommend us breaking our stay and having two bases, or staying all in one place (our issue is the distance between Sorrento and the amalfi coast towns, if we were to total base in Sorrento and visit amalfi coast)
2) How we can travel between the amalfi coast towns. (I understand there is a SITA bus, but anything else)?
3) Any recommended accommodation (under 130euro per room per night twin share)?

12 days for sorrento, capri and pompeii sounds too less abd for sure u have to have uor own car cos transports are not that good if u dont have plenty oftime
as for the accomodation: have u checked booking.com i always use it when i travel in europe and it's amazing, u can find great fares.
if u need any help just let me know

2Not sure it matters much for only a day or two, but we've always thought Sorrento way too full of foreigners...
... and wouldn't ourselves stay there any longer than necessary!
Despite the time lost in changing hotels, I think you'll be glad of also having some time on the other coast - once you see it, you might well kick yourselves if deciding otherwise?
Whilst Positano is undeniably the prettier, Amalfi makes a better base for exploring - with a more accommodating harbour, and given the journey times (rather than the physical distances!) ashore:
If you've not already found it, although well overdue for an update (so do cross-check any times, prices etc - and ignore all references to the 'Metro del Mare' as that's unlikely to be running next month), there's a very useful 'Travel Directory' to the various towns and villages along both sides of the Peninsula, from the area's tourism people, here:
For a little help with using the SITA buses, see:
... and be sure to read reply #3 and 4, for the new SITASud website - which seems to be the only place now to have their current schedules!
And for boats, ferries, hydrofoils etc, try:
...and, repeatedly, this one...
(unlike the Co-op, that operator adds details of further routes only as and when they open!)
... but you'd be best to check locally before relying on any particular sailing happening?
Whilst four days won't allow you to see everything and everywhere of interest here, it's at least a start...

8Wow. many thanks for your posts. I second a big thankyou to peter for your invaluable post. I agree with sorrento, its the mainstream hub and hence why we're looking at two locations to take full advantage of location of our accom.
I indeed found it hard to find reliable transportation advise but thanfully your resources are spot on. I was thinking the ferry to avoid any traffic, but as you've mentioned its a bit of a drama to find any reliable service. so looks like bus it'll be.
