travel advise cameroon

Hi,
I'd like to visit Cameroon for a two week vacation, so i'm trying to figure out my itinerary. Can anyone help with travel times for the following:
Douala-Kribi - and how far is it from there to Campo-Maan park?
Douala-Limbe
Douala - Maroua - it looks like a long way - are there flights there?
Thanks!

Douala - Limbe - easy on good roads, about 2-3 hours depending on traffic and vehicle

Douala - Kribi - easy on good roads, again 3 hours approximately dependant upon traffic and the vehicle you're travelling in

Kribi - Campo Maan - never did that journey, mainly because the park was closed when we were there. Worth checking that it is open when you visit. I was told the road is a bit of a bumpy ride by locals, but don't know that for a fact.

Douala - Maroua - Could get the train to Ngoundere, then onto Maroua. Not sure about flights.

By road I drove Douala to Foumban, in one day. The roads between Foumban and Ngoundere are rough dirt, minimum of 2 days there, then best part of another day to get from Ngoundere to Maroua......quite a journey!

By train Yaounde (bus fro Douala) to Maroua allow 2 full days (from booking to final arrival) and hope there is no derailment. Allow 3 days for the return. Flights go when full, any "schedule" is a dream sheet and totally unreliable. Costs are astronomical and aconfirmed booking is no guarantee of boarding. If you get to Maroua there are excellent excursions into the mountains.

Getting to Kribi is quicker from Yaounde.

Campo Maan, allow at least 2 days to get in and out. Little chance of seeing much. Rains disrupt all travel into the park.

Limbe Rescue centre (zoo) is interesting.

Make all your planning very flexible and keep your sense of humour. Feel free to PM me for any specific info.

Thanks for both advice. I'm still considering the travel since i'm delayed due to an unexpected thing called work. I'm afraid that june/july will be to wet to visit there.

++Douala - Maroua - it looks like a long way - are there flights there?++

Camair flies Douala-Yaounde-Maroua. For schedule see: http://www.camair-co.cm/en.html If there are no delays then the flight is only 1.5 hours. I ended up flying Maroua - N'Djamena - Yaounde - Douala because one of Camair's planes had mechanical problems - that took almost the entire day. My other flight from Douala to Maroua was on time. Planes are new.
Cameroon a very interesting country with lots to see. People are so friendly there.
Happy travels.

Thanks Mangosteen, so I understand you don't share wanderingWilo pesimist view on the flights time table? When did you visit there?

How it is now with to rent a car and drive self? Mostly I wonder about police if they stops often the cars and want to have some "tip=bribe".

Most rental companies insist you take a driver, for good reason as the roads can be terrible, driving standards are worse. To hire a car plus driver you pay for his meals, bed (if overnight), fuel, dash, on top of the expensive rental costs.

Hi Dave, thanks.
You wrote once that you have there one car, have you that still there? If we rent it from you ha ha?
We have no feeling to have some driver with us, we like to go self.
Or is it better to go by taxi or buses? For example from Douala to Limbe or Kribi? Or to this ring road or what is the name now I not remember.
The police, how it is with them?

My car is in my village in the Extreme North - if you get there someone will be available to help you.

Taking public transport is easier, cheaper, gives you the opportunity to look out at passing scenery (instead of watching for potholes, mad drivers, kids, etc) and allows you to interact with local travellers. Taking the bus to Kribi or taxi to Limbe is a good option. To the ring road (still broken in places) you should get a bus to Bamenda then bush taxis to where you would like to visit. You could possibly rent bikes to "do" the whole ring road but you need to carry water and food. Great adventures!

The police are "tourist friendly" throughout the country although in dodgy border regions they may dissuade a tourist from proceeding.

Dave, thanks for the car, it is only so far from Douala and we have no intention to go to North. But it was very nice from you so thanks again :).
So I will see how we do, but it is decide now to go to Cameroon in January so I take one thing at a time!
Can I hear from me to you if I need some more help, OK?

Any advice on reliable guides for the south (about 12 days) and for the north (about 13 days)?
Thanks!
