I had a choice to do Gunkanjima but chose instead to see more sites in Nagasaki. There are 2 boats a day, 1 in the morning and one in the afternoon - each tour is about 3 hours and a bit over 4000 yen. If the weather is bad then the boat might cancel the trip. The place would make (and has made) a great movie set for some apocalyptic or mad max film.

I finally remembered to ask him... sorry it has taken so long...His impression was that the history of the island is more impressive than the island itself. The tours to the island are quite controlled and access is limited on the island. He said that fishermen will drop people off there in the early morning, for a fee, but that it's not legal and there are probably repercussions if caught. He thought if you could wander freely around the island it would be a much more interesting experience.
He said in his view, it is worth going to if you are in Nagasaki, but he wouldn't plan a trip there just for the sake of Hashima alone.
I am just reporting what he said.
