Nanning to Vietnam (Mong Cai)

Next week I'll arrive at Nanning train station at 8.15pm.
Does someone know if it's possible still on the same day to catch a bus to Pingxiang (near the Friendship border), or to Dongxing (near the sea and near to another border crossing)? A night bus would also do it ... though due to the short distances I don't believe there are night buses.
I want to get to Mong Cai (Mong Cai is on the Vietnamese side of the border of Dongxing) as soon as possible.
I'm currently living in China, and have just one week of vacation to go to Vietnam. That's why I'm trying to get to Mong Cai as soon as possible.
From Mong Cai I wanna take a (passenger) boat to Halong Bay. I've done it 5 years ago, and it was great 4 ou 5 hours trip.

3There's no 8:30am train Nanning to Pingxiang. The 5517 leaves at 7:40am.

5Thanks for your replies.
This is what I did 5 years ago: train from Nanning to Beihai (around 3h), the next day bus from Beihai to Dongxing (4h, if I remember well) and crossed the border to Mong Cai, next day boat from Mong Cai to Halong (4h-5h).
But then I had time, which now unfortunately I don't.
jolienfrielink, once I get back from Vietnam (beginning of May), I'll let you know how it went.
But does someone know what's actually the fastest/most convenient way of getting from Nanning to Mong Cai? I guess it will be getting first to Dongxing, still in China, and then just cross the border. Does someone know something about buses from Nanning to Dongxing?
Or do you think it could be easier to get from Nanning to the Friendship border crossing. And then from Lang Son in Vietnam get to Mong Cai?
About that boat from Mong Cai to Halong, does someone know if it still exists, and time schedules?
Thanks a lot.

Do you have any idea what time the bus leaves Nanning, and how long it takes to Halong?
And about getting from Nanning to Dongxing (in China) or to Mong Cai (in Vietnam), does someone have some info?
And about the boat from Mong Cai to Halong, does some know if it still runs and time schedules?

11LOL man. I've got the last edition for China and the 2007's for Vietnam. But guess what ... the Bible doesn't say everything!
I don't know why you keep posting in this thread. So far the only "useful" information you provided was a train departure time, which apparently was wrong!
To other people, I kindly ask if someone has information regarding:
- I'll arrive at Nanning train station at 8.15pm. Can I take a bus to Dongxing still on the same day?
- Is the boat from Mong Cai to Halong still running? What times?

Is the boat from xMong Cai to Halong still running? What times?
Well now, I did a big search online and found an answer to question number 2 -
"Getting There & Away:
Mill Ngoc (tell: 883 988; Pho Hung Vuong) runs high-speed hydrofoils daily from Mong Cat to Bai Chay (US$15, three hours) in xHalong City at 9am and 2pm (Sam and 1pm from xHalong City). From xMong Cai, shuttle vans leave the hydrofoil ticket offices for the pier at Dan Tien Port, about 15km away. Arriving in xMong Cai, the hydrofoils often berth in the middle of the open sea; don't worry, you haven't broken down! Low tides require a transfer by small boat. Mui Ngoc has hydrofoils to Cai Rong on Van Don Island. The boat heads south to Van Don (US$10, two hours) at 2pm. In the other direction, it departs Van Don at 8.30am. Finally, there is also a slow ferry to xHaiphong (70,000d, eight hours), departing daily at 6pm, Do the maths, it arrives at an ungodly hour."
From this website - Vietnam Travel Guide.
Edited to add:
Did you do a search online for answers? After another (long) search, here's an answer for your first question -
"You can go by bus or by train to Ping Xiang. There is a bus route from xNanning,China – PingXiang,China – xHanoi, xVietnam. It’s an international bus route, depart from xNanning Langdong bus station. departure time is 07:30, 08:30, 09:30 everyday morning, price is about 150 RMB. It takes about 2-3h to PingXiang(Friendship Gate), and other 1h for Immigration, then you can get in xVietnam. Destination is xHanoi. Whole time would be 7-8 hours."
Information from Nanning here.
The T8701 departs xNanning at 18.45, arrives Pingxiang 22.11. xNanning train timetable can be found here.
You know something OP? All you had to do was look up Man in Seat Sixty-One and you'd have found the answer to question straight away.
That'll be Sixty bucks for me service fee thanks.

Thanks a lot for your reply Captain Courageous.
I have the LP guidebook for Vietnam 2007 edition. The first answer was literally copied from it. You can also find it on the LP web site: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/vietnam/northeast-vietnam/mong-cai-and-chinese-border/transport/getting-there-away
But my point is that as the book is from 2007, and probably it was researched 1 or 2 years before, the information is now 6 or 7 years old. And my question is if it is still true?
I'm really interested in going to Mong Cai and there catch that boat. So I'm not very interested in the direct Nanning to Hanoi options, but thanks anyway.
Yeah, I had look at the man in seat 61 website. Its a great site, and wherever I go there are trains I always have a look at the site.
I'm afraid you don't deserve the 60 bucks fee (unless you mean 60VND). You'd have to provide much more valuable and accurate info to get that fee :D
