5 Months Central AmericaHi Guys
I have been reading lots on the internet but I have found it difficult to find answers to my questions.
My husband and I have around 5 months and we want to travel around Central America. I have been reading on the internet that its possible to do this in a campervan, which we really fancy doing.
We were thinking of flying to USA, buying a secondhand campervan and driving down to Mexico and going from there?
Is this feasable? As we are British can we buy a secondhand campervan in USA? How long does it take for the registration to come through? Can we apply for this if staying in a hotel?
Is it safe? I have read that just by being sensible it is safe, is this true?
Thanks in advance.
Any internet sites that you can point me to would be welcomed - Thanks

2For buying a vehicle in USA, post on USA Branch, or read the FAQ at top of the USA Branch.
For traveling thru Central America in a van, please be aware there are crime risk and issues you need to consider, and travel at night is not safe, and you need to stay in hotels with secure parking, as you can't leave anything in the van unattended, nor are there many places to camp for a RV, and many places are not safe as well. Is it safe? Safety is all relative, but compared to most the USA, no, its not safe, especially for a foreigner. You need to know the risk and how to avoid the trouble. Each country is different, and every country has issues.
Lots of people drive from USA to Panama, a command of Spanish is also a big help, and also also keep in mind, you can't leave any country in CA without the car, as its stamped in your Passport, so you would face huge taxes and fines if you depart without it, with the exception of Costa Rica, though dumping a car is not a good idea nor very cool. How would sell it to get back the money you spent on it? Also, I cant imagine a decent RV costing less than $15-$20K in good working order. Even a decent used VW Golf or Toyota Corolla would be in the low teens.
Keep in mind also the cost of fuel, is very high in CA, in CR its is over $5 USD gallon now.
With 5 months you can easily tour the region via public bus, shuttles, taxi hires, boats, ferries and inter country flights, like 99% of the travelers and locals due, which is far more cheaper and actually easier IMO. You can also rent cars in most the countries too, which would be about $400 week in most, but many areas and places you dont even need a car, or you cant take a car there, or its best not be in a car.
Anyway, there is a website Drive the Americas that list all the issues regarding border crossings, insurance, routes, risk and safety concerns. They also have a travel forum.
Good luck, its not hard to drive the region, just know the dos, donts, risks and safety issues.
Also, rainy season is rather bad for touring the region in late Sept thru mid Nov, and in Oct CR/Panama is best avoided.
