Swimming in Negombo beach?

Hello. Are the beaches at Negombo too polluted to swim in?

No though the water is pretty muddy there. However swimming at Negombo is a big risk due to rip currents which can catch any swimmer unawares. This is true of many beaches on the west coast in fact. Every year several locals drown in the sea at Negombo, two years ago one of my friends lost a good mate that way - but you do still see locals swimming, especially near the breakwater near where Browns Beach used to be. So have a paddle but stick to hotel pools. The only really safe place to swim is Unawatuna where there is a lagoon protected by a reef.

I had a swim, not polluted that you'd notice, but not paradise either...
