Angola: Minefields and Diamonds

Sorry to interrupt the never ending discussion about letters of invitation and visa issues (it's a pain, I know!) I'm just back from a two week trip around the lesser visited parts of Angola. Spent my first week touring the HALO Trust de-mining facilities in the south-east of the country, second week up in the north-east on the border with the Congo, where all the diamonds come from.

Towns / cities I got to: Menongue, Cuito Cuanavale, Longa, Kuito, Huambo, Lubango, Saurimo, Lucapa and Dundo.

Week 1 (Minefields): https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10100193808223929.2495543.36812366&type=3&l=b21cf13723

Week 2 (Diamonds): https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10100199715410879.2496967.36812366&type=1&l=b27634e22f

I might write something about it eventually, but in the mean time, if anyone wants any information just let me know!

Fantastic pictures! Just out of interest, was the language barrier a problem in Angola? do many people speak English?

I think if you don't speak Portuguese you will have issues in most of Angola apart from the capital. Down in the south east there are a lot of Zambians, or Angolans who have lived in Zambia, so they should be able to help you out as they speak English. Also, in the north east you're very close to the Congo, so a fair few people speak French. There are not many English speakers though!
