Help me plan my trip!!!Hi all,
I'm going on my honeymoon in July and am trying to decide where to go. Given time and money constraints we're probably limited to a week and Central, South America or the Caribbean. Of those, the Caribbean is our least favorite option (sorry ya'll!).
Here's what we want:
1. Mountains for hiking and cooler temps
2. Good diving
That's pretty much it. After I decide the country/ towns, then I'll figure out specific places. I've never been to this part of the world (always Africa and Asia) but my fiance lived in Paraguay and is fluent in Spanish.

2IslandDiva, I was going to say exactly the same thing! I think those two islands offer perhaps the best diving in all the Caribbean and excellent hiking as well.
Mamajosh, the only "caveat" is that Saba has NO beaches and Dominica has some beaches but they aren't that great by Caribbean standards and you haven't indicated that good beaches are important to you.
Both islands are the tops of volcanoes jutting up from the sea, which makes for some great diving and great hiking over the rugged terrain, Saba is also tiny (just a couple of miles wide by a couple of miles long).
If you'd like excellent hiking, very good diving, and some very good beaches as well, then Guadeloupe would be a good island to consider as well. It is much more touristed than Saba or Dominica, but most of the tourists congregate on the "Grande Terre" side of the island in just a couple of towns. The Basse Terre side of the island is much more rugged and less touristed with approximately 200 miles of great hiking trails.
I've traveled (and dived) pretty extensively throughout the Caribbean and Central America, but very little in South America. However, I'm pretty comfortable saying that if great diving is a key factor, you will fare better focusing on the Caribbean area (even if that is the Caribbean coast of Central or South America). Tropical reef doesn't extend far down into S.A. And the Pacific waters are more suited to diving for large pelagics in the colder waters in places like the Galapagos Islands (Ecuador) and Cocos Islands (Costa Rica) if you are looking for great diving on the west coast.
On the Caribbean coast of Central America, the best dive areas IMHO are the barrier reef Belize (but it can be an hour and a half or more boat ride from the mainland), the Bay Islands of Honduras and Cozumel Mexico, but the diving in these places is far away from the good hiking (best diving is off of islands; best hiking is on the mainland). For these reasons, I would tend to concentrate on a smaller area and go somewhere like Dominica where there is top notch diving and hiking in relatively small, easily manageable area.
On Dominica, the Ft. Young Hotel is a great "honeymoon worthy" hotel at a very reasonable price and is a much better value than you'll find most other places in the Caribbean.
