Traveling Alone for 3 days in July-Tips?

Hi all,

I am arriving in July and have the option of staying in Faroe for a few days before heading out to sea for work. I am wondering, if I fly in to the main airport and want to travel on a backpacker budget, what are the highlights I can/should see, and how many days (2, 3, 4) should I plan to be traveling the islands? I assume the hostel networks are the best way to go. I am pretty outdoorsy (love hiking diving etc) so suggestions for hikes I can do alone or places I could meet others to join these type of trips (once again on a budget) would be fantastic.

Thank you!

How will you get around?
If using busses - although the network is fine (connecting towns not "nice places") it IS time consuming.
The tourist offices 8there are many local ones - name in faroese: Kunningarstova ) have info on hiking tours - both some on the net and when visiting).

Arriving to the airport at Vagar, which is "far" (to the extent anything can be "far away" there) from Torshavn, an option would be to visit Mykines on day 2, Another nice area is the northern half of Eysturoy and Streymoy - but both will call fo ½ dat to go there and 1 day for a single hike.
Even if you want outdoor things - go to Torshavn on the the morning the day before you start work in order to see something different. If staying in Torshavn a trip to Nolsoy will be fine.

Make sure that you HAVE located places to sleep, (and eat!) before you travel anywhere. There are limited possibilities outside Torshavn - even a supermaker cannot be found in all villages!

You must be aware that on remote islands of 50 000 inh the number of hostels is VERYlimited.
Thsi is the ONE on Vager (island with the airport)

Lists of "hostels" in general:

(lots of these have limitations - make sure you know is they take individualls, and not only for 1 weeks, are open)

Thank you so much for the reply! I plan on taking public transport to wherever I end up. It is good to know this is time consuming and that I should reserve hostels. I am living in a pretty remote place at the moment so I never leave town without proper supplies...therefore, it is good to know to keep up this habit when traveling around Faroe.
