1It's more geared to business travelers in the tech industry, but I can recommend the zhongguancun somerset. It's near the subway and summer palace, but a bit far from other tourist attractions.
A deluxe 2 bedroom 2 bath is about 150USD/night if you book in advance. They have a full kitchen and a washing machine in the units.

2There is a brand new Ibis hotel that opened in the CBD 1 block from the Silk Market and on the same main Line 1 train, center of all things interesting, and just south end of the Ritan Park/Embassy area, on same street at the LG Twin Towers. Next to a small grocery with a nice food court too, and Starbucks in the LG Tower. At $63 night a deal. This is next door to the Sci Tech Mall (Burberry/Armani/Bentley dealer). Its about 4 trains stops to just about all the key areas in BJ. They even have a nice cafe in lobby with both western and chinese dishes which is nice when your adjusting and hungry and tired.
Even easy to take train from airport to there, figure 55 minutes door to door.

3He is asking for apartment not a hotel.
Try post in Beijingers forum, some people may able to share/rent his/her apartment to you. Actually if you are visiting Hangzhou instead of Beijing, I am willing to share 2 bedroom to you, since I live in a 3 bedrooms 1 guestroom house alone...>< And your pirce is attractive for me ...hahah

4Thanks for your replies and the offer ShawshankBlake! We ended up booking a 2 bedroom apartment at Beijing Century Towers. It is centrally located at Chaoyang and only RMB500/night. Seems good value. Will let you know how it turns out.
