Indeed. The topicstarter might probably not have known their history if thinking that Russian will really help him there :)

I've just returned from a short trip around Ukraine. Although I have no Russian, I found just about every bus and train ticket seller being helpful once I had written down my destination (in both English, and Cyrillic from the LP guide), date and (if relevant) train number. In Odesa, the woman even left her busy desk to lead me out to the correct bus! And yes, you might want to learn to recognise some Cyrillic phrases e.g. "Closed", "Toilets"...

thanks oxfordandy, I feel good that it was not that complicated. I did buy an Ukrianian phrasebook :)
