transit Iraq from Kuwait to Iran

Would it be possible to receive an Iraq transit or tourist visa in Kuwait, then travel by car to Iran? Is the Iraq-Iran border open to foreigners? What's the security situation in southern Iraq currently? Looking at the map it seems it's less than 100kms from the Kuwait/Iraq border to the Iraq/Iran border east of Basra.

In one of the recent LP Turkey books, Tony Wheeler talked about going into Kurdistan, but I think it was as a destination, not as a waypoint. Best to not to try I think

No. The chances of getting a visa for southern Iraq without sponsorship or tour are next to impossible.

There's always a transit visa but you're correct that they may refuse me one because of the security situation.

Southern Iraq is relatively placid at the moment.

But one reason it's placid is because the authorities are extremely vigilant. There are many checkpoints. The authorities definitely do not want unescorted foreigners wandering around at the moment.

I'm afraid you are not going to be able to get any kind of visa (including a transit visa) without having a local sponsor or tour company who will escort you around. Sorry.

Even you can get the visa,it's very possible you could be stopped by the checkpoints on your way to the border.
