2 Weeks in Italy- reasonable itinerary??
Hello ..My husband and I are planning our 2 week trip to Italy from June 23- July 7. With the help of guidebooks, tripadvisor, lonely planet and these forums, I'm hoping that we are able to fashion a great trip.
Does this itinerary look reasonable? Any advice? thanks!
Fly into Rome, and take a fast train to Venice-- 2 days in Venice
From Venice --> Florence. 4 days in Florence
Florence --> Amalfi Coast via Naples. Train to Sorrento and catch a bus to Positano
3 days in Amalfi Coast (not sure where yet-- Sorrento as base possibly)
Sorrento --> Rome
5 days in Rome
Is it reasonable for a B&B to request payment in cash or travelers checks upon check in?
Thank you!

I don't think anyone is going to ask for payment in traveler's checks. They are really not used much in Europe any more.2
Can you fly into Venice instead, so you're not wasting time on the train? I think the fastest train is still almost 4 hours, plus making your way to/from train station, etc adds another hour or so. Are you planning on heading to Venice the same day as you arrive?Check out Capri while in the Amalfi Coast/Naples area!
Not sure about travelers cheques but I've been asked to pay cash upon check-in before. Ask to see your room first though!

The itenerary sounds reasonable to me.The only thing I can point is that I think you need a car to really enjoy the Amalfi coast... for the rest it's ok.
Just as a curiosity: the fastest train between Rome and Venice takes 3.45 hrs and costs about 75€ / person

Agree with above - your itinerary means a lot of doubling back. Can you get an open jaw ticket in to Venice and out of Rome? - or if you can't get direct to Venice, Milan is much nearer than Rome. Details of trains on the trenitalia siteRe prepayment, travellers cheques are really not used anymore in Europe - credit and debit cards are used instead. I've not known a hotel request payment in advance, but it is quite common to ask for a card to be swiped for a nominal amount giving the hotel access to your account details in case you decide to leave without paying, however assuming you check out in the normal way on the last day, you should be given something to sign.

Try to fly in to Venice and out of Napels or the other way around to reduce your travel time.7
I'm travelling in June and doing pretty much the mirror of what your doing!!Except mine is:
Fly into Rome
4 days in Rome
3 days in Amalfi
2 days in Florence
3 days in Venice
then on to vienna (austria)
In between the places we're taking high speed train and booking. Very quick.
I would suggest flying into Rome and then leave from venice. As I agree there seems to be backtracking.

We had not planned out our itinerary that thoroughly prior to booking the airline tickets, which is why we are going in a circle rather than fly into one city and fly out at another. We already looked at Trenitalia, and figured if we depart to Venice the same day we won't have too many stops. I will check if we can fly into Venice and out of Rome, as that makes a lot more sense..
Thanks for the advice!

Have you decided where you will base in the amalfi coast? Found accom? We're looking at Positano (as they say sorrento is very commercial).10
Yes, we booked at Villa Rosa in Positano for 3 nights... looking forward to it!
