Special permits for Elbrus area?

Does anyone have current info on this? I'm thinking of going to Mt. Elbrus in May, probably flying in via Moscow and Mineralnye Vody.
Since the area was closed last year due to the ski area bombing, I'm wondering if special permits are required this year.

Thanks,
JimS

To the best of my knowledge, even before the ski area bombing special permits were needed to climb Mt. Elbrus. One of the companies repeatedly mentioned here with regard to Elbrus is Pilgrim Tours. You might also try searching this forum for several old threads about the area.

According to the Pilgrim website, no special permits are required for the area. There is a permit for the Park, though. Sounds like it's just like the NP entry fee up the road from my house here in Colorado.

If I were to go anywhere further toward Georgia from the Elbrus area, though, a special border permit is required. I think that was what was confusing me. So many sites said "border permit" but didn't spell out that this was not for Elbrus itself. Since I'm thinking about going for the Red Fox Elbrus Festival in May. most of the local stuff would be taken care of. I was concerned that there might be additional official paperwork reqired before I arrived in the area.

Thanks much.
