Often when you are in a rather remote area, food may be scarce but i'm certain that in most cases the food for such activities is considered prior to departure. Thus if one asks for any intollerances (lest we forget the lactose issues of Asia)/requests they should be catered for

Goodness gracious me..
No wonder the man in the photo looks stunned..

If you buy tickets via local agencies and book tours or treks with them things will go wrong sooner or later.

Organization, facilities and training is not up to western standards - and even in the west there are screw ups in the travel industry.
It's impossible to do perfect tours all times.

Best way around is if you organize things for yourself. Any screw ups will be your own then, of course.

wanderingstraycat - one familiar with Laos would know very well that monks in Laos are Theravada monks who are allowed to & do eat meat (chicken, pork, beef, buffalo, fish all permitted; only a few types of meat e.g. human, elephant, dog, lion, etc are forbidden).

So when sonuvcdouille cited "even the monks eat meat" (as justification for forcing Western vegetarians to go against their belief system and eat meat) it was totally irrelevant and added nothing to the conversation?

No-one is asking any SE Asian folks to go against their tradition.

All people are asking is for tour agents to follow through on their clearly advertised promise to properly cater for vegetarians.

There's some wisdom in what you two are saying and believe me, it hasn't keep me up at night (...despite all the faux outrage from the mob of childish posters on here).

That said if this post makes other travellers actively consider their choice of Luang Namtha tour agents a bit more closely than that can only be a good thing.

NormC, how were we to know that the tour agent's promises were not followed through upon?

There's a certain amount of blind faith you need to apply in these situations.

In our situation it seems like this faith would have been better placed with a different tour agent.

I didn't realise posters could only reply to post that were directly addressed to them.

Surely that's what private messaging is for?

Yes, clearly you came here to extract your pound of (vegetarian) flesh from this tour operator. Despite all the comments illustrating why you weren't treated as poorly as you seem to feel you were, you are still determined to get some sort of revenge against this company. And if your little tantrum here causes someone to not use this company (zero chance of that happening by the way) then you will somehow feel better about your situation. A true gentleman!

What for?
Other travel agents will screw up too. None of them is perfect.
Go to the bus station and get your own ticket for bus of your choice. Buy your own food and have it cooked for you if you need special diet. Get your private guide and porters if you are not fit and need to adjust treks to your own capabilities.

And yes, I agree with jjack, quite bitter to be on a revenge campaign against this particular tour operator - considering that no tour operator will ever be perfect - in particular in this part of the world.

Get over it, learn to do things on your own or you always will be disappointed and miserable.
