1I stayed in Dina's Hostel at xmas & had friends in Pension Roma.
Both highly recommended, good location, good meeting place, well run, etc

2Valentine Inn has been advised against on the Middle East branch for years, sorry to hear of another bad experience there.

3Planned on cutting Jordan from my itinerary so I did not do much research. We split a taxi with two other travelers and decided to stay (the price looked good and we were exhausted) ...bad idea.
Live and learn.

4As comments about the Valentine Inn in Petra appear at various places on the Jordan branch, I posted the following there but will also stick it here:
Just to make some of the comments on the Valentine clearer, I will quote below what the very reliable Rough Guide to Jordan (Rough Guides, 2009) has to say about the Valentine - even though it doesn't include it in the accommodation it lists for Wadi Musa/Petra. In a coloured box at the top of the page dealing with inexpensive hotels it says:
The Valentine Inn is a busy backpacker hotel in the middle of Wadi Musa. If you google it, you'll find mixed reviews. However, please note that Rough Guides do not recommend the Valentine Inn as a place to stay.
When a reputable guidebook chooses to leave a hotel out of its accommodation listings but then places such a highlighted comment, I think it speaks volumes about the place and the kind of feedback they must have had from the Valentine's guests.
