Savonlinna to VirratCan someone tell me the best way to get from Savonlinna to Virrat? In case it makes a difference, I will be getting from one place to the other on a Thursday in July.
This is what I would like my day to look like:
I will be waking up in Kuopio and seeing the Orthodox Church (is it still open? somewhere it said that the Orthodox Church Museum is closed but it is unclear to me if that is synonymous with the Orthodox Church). Take the 11:10 bus/train to Savonlinna and see the Retretti Art Center. Spend my evening transporting myself to Virrat. Is the easiest thing to drive? It looks like it is just about 4hrs30mins, but I am uncomfortable driving alone.
If I take an evening flight to Helsinki (which is just 70 USD) that gets in a little after 20:00, is there transportation at that time to get to Virrat, or at least to Tampere? My goal is to take the Runoilijan Tie from Virrat to Tampere the following day, so I would like to spend the night in Virrat (I don't care if I get there in the wee hours of the morning). I could even sleep in Tampere, and then take an early morning bus to Virrat the following day.
Hope this isn't too confusing.

1About the Orthodox Church opening times you mey email to Kuopio info firstname.lastname@example.org
Do you know that Retretti Art Center is not in Savonlinna. It is in Punkaharju. I do not know how you get there and back, but maybe this will help http://www.savonlinna.travel/index.php?page=palvelu&hl=en&dataid=402&language=en_GB&mj=
How to get to Virrat? You may find bus timetables here http://www.matkahuolto.fi/en/
If you start in the morning from Kuopio and want to see the church, Savonlinna and Retretti, you will by no means get to Virrat the next morning unless you have a car and drive all night long. Savonlinna itself is a nice town, you should spend some hours there. Use viamichelin.com to estimate the driving time. I would not fly, it's too much hassle.

2Thank you! Fortunately the Retretti Art Center closes at 18:00. I think I will be arriving in Savonlinna at 14:45, and I see now I have to then get to the Retretti Art Center, so I guess I have to hope that 2 hours or so will be enough time at the Art Center. Do you think that would be okay?
I am skipping Savonlinna. Something has to go and I am picking that. I just can't see everything.
I was on that site that you gave, but it does not help me. According to that site, no buses go to Virrat, but I know that some do because it says elsewhere that buses go from Tampere. If I make a bus or train at 19:00 or so, I am fine with that. I don't care if I get to Virrat at 01:00 the next morning. I am a night owl anyway. I'd just rather not drive it. What is the best way on public transportation for me to transport myself from the Retretti Art Center to Virrat?
I suppose I could just go from Retretti to Tampere and take the Runoilijan Tie one way from Tampere to Virrat on Friday, 7/6, but is there some kind of shuttle that brings people back from Virrat to Tampere? I don't want to return on the boat. I don't want to take it both ways. One way is sufficient.

3I think this is too complicated for me to understand. Punkaharju and Virrat are too far from each other to connect on one day or evening. Why do you want to go just for one day to Virrat?
How do you think to get to Retretti from Savonlinna? IMHO you should stay a night in Savonlinna, visit Retretti the next day, stay a night somewhere and try to find your way to Virrat the third day. Maybe 2 hours at Retretti is ok, but you need a lot more time to get there and back. It's in the coutryside, not a tramway from Savonlinna bus/train station. I've been there, but by car, have no idea how to get to Punkaharju bu public transport.
Take a map of Finland, look at the distances. There are no direct connections between the places you intend to visit...

4Do not know why you vant to make the Runoilijan Tie between Tampere and Virrat. But if it is just to make a trip on a lake, you might do the same from Savonlinna to Retretti Art Center in Punkaharju.

6Well I wanted to make the trip because I had read it was beautiful. Is that not the case?
I have not been to that trip from Tampere to Virrat, sure it must be beautiful. Buf I know that the trips on the lakes are quite similar, only the ships are different. I think the steam ship from Savonlinna to Punkaharju would interest me more than the one from Tampere to Virrat. Punkaharju itself is beautiful, google photos to see what it looks like.
If you are especially interested in Retretti, I think you should spend there more than an hour. If you know what word "retretti" means, you understand that one should not rush through it. :-))

7I think you aren't following this dialogue.
I will be arriving in Savonlinna at 14:45. I will perhaps get to Retretti around 15:30. The museum is open until 18:00. Thats 2.5 hours, not 1 hour. Where did you get that number from?

8OK there seems to be a bus dp at 15:05 Savonlinna ar 15.45 Retretti, so you'll have 2 hours at Retretti.
But now I cannot find a bus timetable to get back to Savonlinna the same evening, there's only 17:40 bus. The summer timetables will come out later in spring.

9I think the steam ship from Savonlinna to Punkaharju would interest me more than the one from Tampere to Virrat.
I agree with this!! Savonlinna area is known to be the most beautiful area in Finland, and I would deffinitely take the steam ship from Savonlinna to Retretti, and skip Runoilijan Tie if you are on a tight schedule. I have lived in Savonlinna and Tampere, and if you want to see beautiful nature, choose Savolinna!
