For now, in the main branch. We dont know if Travel Companions will be returned or not at this stage. They are still getting destination branches back up and running.
You will just have to go with what your agency is saying for now rather than hearsay.

I can assure you that 2 people groups are being allowed to enter Tibet these days. Contact recommended, tibetan owned, travel agencies in this forum to confirm.

I've asked about that to my friends and they confirmed that 2 people groups are allowed now.

But they also told me that from February 12th, when Losar starts, TTB will stop issuing permits. All foreigners must leave Tibet before that date.

So, Losar is celebrated for 15 days. What about march? Would TTB restart issuing permits from that month?

Thank you very much. Very useful information in this thread!

Latest information on permit : Unfortunately the TAR Tourism Office has suspended the issuance of foreign travel permits(TTB permit) untill around the end of March.

If any updates will let every one know.

Hey, does this mean that as a group of 4 British travellers who have booked to visit Tibet in mid-April we will have to wait until permits become available again before applying?... or can we still apply now for our mid-April trip? Also, I hear the most of last year Everest base camp was closed, is this still the case? Thank you.

Stopped issuing permits means they're not taking any applications no matter when the period of travel is for. So sorry, its now a matter of waiting to see what happens.
Not sure at any rate they would have taken an application this far out.

Thanks Tenzin, that's why I've asked you for confirmation.

If you want to enter in mid-April, then you travel agency will apply for them at the beginning of the month, 10-15 days before your arrival. It depends of the TTB to accept this application or not. If Tibet is closed at that moment, no matter when you book the tour. Everything depends of TTB office.

It's very important to have an alternative plan when travelling to Tibet. It can happen that you don not get your permits to enter Tibet when you planned or, simply, that you are not allowed to access the region.

I'm little optimistic now. I hope things get better.

There are three levels of bureaucracy you need to get through to travel in Tibet: Chinese Visa, a Tibet Tourism Bureau (TTB) permit to get into Tibet and an Alien Travel Permit to travel to certain regions of Tibet.

Beware that the permit situation is subject to rapid and unpredictable change by the Chinese government, how these rules are interpreted depends on the political climate in Tibet. Don’t be surprised if the permit system is radically different from that described in this article. And it’s worth checking the current situation with us before you make the decision to travel to Tibet

In the past few years, Tibet travel permits have resumed on April 1st. We are expecting to hear between March 15th to 20th about this year's Tibet travel permit resuming on April 1st. As soon as I hear I will let everyone know. Losar Tashi Delek! Happy Tibetan New Year!
