Forgive my ignorance, but after reading these posts I am much more confused about what real dangers exist. I understand that things can happen anywhere, but is Honduras that much worse than Costa Rica or any other CA countries. I can understand the bigger cities, San Jose sketched me out a bit as the sun began to set waiting for a bus, but are the ruins or the islands lumped into these tales and statistics or crime and lack of safety.

Everything is 'lumped into' the statistics.

That is why they have very little or no relevance for the average tourist (who probably doesn't visit any of the big cities like Tegus at all)

Personally,I believe that if you use common sense and follow a few basic 'rules' you can take a trip almost anywhere (except a warzone) without great risk.

But no trip can ever be 100% safe.

I got caught of guard with the massive protest I received when I told friends and family of my plans. Though I have only seen Costa Rica and Bocas in panama I feel that all of CA is similar to an extent. It would appear that Honduras cannot shake the stigmas surrounding it.

Calabrate2, you are from the USA. Wherever you live there you are probably at more risk of violent crime at home than you are anywhere you could travel to apart from a war zone.
