Christmas/New Year in NYC
My husband & I are travelling from Australia wanting to spend Christmas/New Year in NYC 2013/14. Our 3 sons aged 20,22 & 24 will join us. Suggestions please for self contained accommodation close to the NYC action!!??? Cheers2
carracar has given the common wisdom of this forum. I reject it. Because it doesn't apply in New Jersey, which is right across the river and a very easy commute from the right locations. You could book something like this, for example: http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p9167124
#2 you can't reject carracar's wisdom because it is 100% correct. He even threw in a few conditionals such as 'seem' and 'most'. Yours, however wonderfully useful, specifically is not what OP asked about so it is a bit rich to be criticising someone else's advice.OP it is illegal in NYC, you could find yourself without accom and you take your chances but some people on TT recommend looking at something like airbnb.com - but I wouldn't recommend it for the reasons mentioned.
Perhaps you could also look at TT's houseswap branch and similar web-based things, particularly if you are coming from Sydney which is often rammed in the period you describe.

I reject 100% Tiltedcurves suggestion to stay in New Jersey for a visit to NYC, that is just going to be a bummer IMO.NYC is so vibrant, has an electric energy like no other city in the world, and to stay in NJ with three 20 somethings would be a travesty, it would be a bad movie at the least.
Christmas time is also a very festive time in NYC, so its all part of the fun. There are so many cultural and historic places to visit in NYC, its endless, add to this a nightlife, that will see the 20 somethings out until early morning more often than not, they should have their own room.
Get two rooms in the city, anywhere from 60th to the wall street is fine, the nighlife for the hipsters is all downtown, below 23rd street. The tourist areas are mainly midtown, between 60th and 32nd, 42nd to 55th, from 5th ave to 7th ave is the epicenter, with Broadway shows, museums and goings on.
Check Quickbook.com for good properties at a discount.
But this is a very busy time in the city, so it will not be cheap.
I spend 4 months a year in NYC for work, the decade, you want to be in NYC, period. $250 night is a decent property in a good location.
I would stay in Brooklyn long before NJ....uughhh

Yes, where do you live? A house swap might be the answer. I would check out vrbo.com and consider places on the train lines--east to Long Island and north to Westchester County.7
We have here an OP that is specifically seeking "self contained accomodation" for a family (not nightlife for hipsters), which I read as meaning a vacation rental type property. Such a target makes a lot of sense for a family staying a while in an expensive location. But it's now illegal in NYC proper. So, the real choice is, look for a different type of lodging in Manhattan, or look for a vacation rental in NJ. Functionally, the parts of NJ that front the Hudson across from Manhattan are, and are sometimes called locally, the "sixth borough." In fact, they're functionally more part of the downtown than are many parts of NYC proper.8
There are some apartment style hotels in Manhattan that are perfectly legal. Check out the Affinia properties (there are several in Manhattan), also Eastgate Tower and Radio City Apartments. You can expect to pay a premium price for New Year's Eve, and for early and mid December. Christmas week itself is usually a bit lower as people stay close to home and demand dies down.

I think OP is asking for "self contained accomodations" because that's how Aussies like to travel. Similar to their love of RVs, Niagara Falls and Monument Valley. Chances are, they will have to adjust their expectatations and get two hotel rooms, in either Manhattan or Brooklyn. Given the wealth of street food and cheap eats in NYC, staying in your rental apartment and cooking makes no sense.11
check outthis company. We used them back in 2009, before the law changed. I have been in contact with them since, at the time they weren't 100% sure of how it would effect their business. As they are still advertising, I am guessing they are still able to offer some of their properties. They where good to deal with, the property we stayed at was clean, tidy, comfortable and close to shops, train etc.

Thanks everyone, however now I really AM confused!!I am after self contained accom because we will be staying for approx 2 weeks & don't want to eat out every meal. My boys will DEFINITELY want to immerse in the NYC action...actually hubby & I will too!!
We live in the Top End of Oz, Darwin and yes would love to do a swap but unfortunately most people form USA are only interested in Sydney or Melbourne!!! :(
How legit is 'VacationRentalsInNYC.com????

From what I've learned here I don't think that's legit, but you'll have to look to other information to confirm. If it was me I'd go with Homeaway property # Rental 937480. I have no affiliation with the condo owner, but I know the location and think it would work for you, and the photos look great. It's a couple minutes' walk to either of two PATH stations (one a 24-hour waterfront walkway to the Hoboken transit terminal and ferry dock, for a slighly pricier but cool way in to Manhattan). The PATH train runs from there 24/7 and brings you to either Penn Station or lower Manhattan in about 10 minutes. It's also right by the Holland tunnel, if you wanted to spring for an unnecessary taxi. And Hoboken itself has urban vibe nightlife.
