Route 101 Road Trip

Hi there!

So my girlfriend and I are planning on taking a trip down Route 101 from Central Oregon to San Diego. We have about a month to do it. We want to camp mostly. We want to do a lot of rock climbing, swimming, hiking, and just all around exploring. Does anyone have any good suggestions on where to stop and things like that? We also are willing to drive off the 101 for truly spectacular sites! We are young and adventurous, but we are on a budget. Please give us any and all suggestions!!

Thank you!

Rock climbing at Pinnacles Nat. Mon.. There is also another recent thread here re Camping along Highway 101. Note that 101 is not the coastal route through much of California, Highway 1 hugs the coast north and south of SF. Also, I always recommend looking into free camping on public lands (National Forests, BLM lands, etc.) - Google "dispersed camping."

There are many campgrounds along the coastal route of Highway #1, from the redwood forest. near Humboldt, south to Point Reyes National Seashore in Marin County. Along Highway #101, there are camping areas near Mt. Shasta; near Lake Shasta; in Trinity Alps National Forest; along Highway #50, between Placerville and Lake Tahoe; and in Yosemite Valley (you would need reservations far in advance), or camp outside the park in Mariposa or other place. There is a Climber's Guide to the Yosemite Valley available at REI and mountaineering stores. There is camping in Sequoia National Park. There is camping along Highway #1, from Santa Cruz south to San Diego. There is also a Climber's Guide to the Pinnacles and a Climber's Guide to Tahquitz Rock located in San Bernardino County, not far from San Diego. There is a beach campground near Coronado Island, San Diego.
