Surat thani to Sungai kolok 16th April train not an optionWe're a bit locked in on dates as we are only have a month's holiday. For various reasons we really need to travel around the 16th of April give or take a day at the most. I know, I know Songkran and all that. We will be on Koh Pha ngan and want to go to Kuala Besut to go to Perhentians. Our plan was a train from Surat thani to Sungai Kolok and take it from there. However I tried to book a ticket from Surat to Sungai, it is sixty days before travel today and already the Train is booked out. Tried the 17th and the 15th, same. Any suggestions for alternative mode of transport. Route? Surat thani to Khota Bharu by bus? A link to a bus company?

1The trains are not yet booked out on those dates, u just can't book a ticket from Surat Thani to Sungai Kolok on the website.
But u can book from BKK to Sungai Kolok on the 16th Apr no probs.
As soon as u arrive in Thailand, go to any railway station and try to book your tickets.
Failing that, there's Train 447 which departs Surat Thani daily at 0633 and arriving Sungai Kolok at 1800.
I think its 3rd class seats only, just front up at the Surat Thani station early for a seat.

2I think we will need to book earlier as it is the 16th of April. We won't be in Bangkok or anywhere near there this trip.

4Sure there will be buses. Maybe not a direct bus. If no direct bus, get an early bus to Hat Yai and then either a bus or minibus on to Sungai Kolok.

5How from far is Sungai Kolok from Hat yai? Bus from Hat Yai to Khota Bharu?

7I checked and you were right about the train not being booked out. I have done the email booking at passenger-ser however the site says to pick up the tickets from Hualompong in Bangkok, so I don't know if it will be successful. Apparently you can wait for up to a month for a reply email and maybe never get one. I wouldn't normally worry about booking ahead from home but we are travelling the day after Songkran. So no buses across the border either.

8What you should remember is that the train will come from Bangkok and people will be getting off at ST. I would be very surprised if you were unable to find a seat on one of the trains at the last minute if you are not able to sort a ticket in advance. Remember you can buy and make reservations for trains at any railway station in Thailand
I think the bus from Bangkok to SG passes through Surat Thani but not sure, but buses likely to be as full as the trains. I think the only buses from Had Yai to Sungai Kolok are the long distance ones from Pucket and bangkok so they are not frequent and the mini bus would be the best option.
No buses across the border but regular air con local bus from border to KB

9You could fly Surat Thani to KL and KL to Kota Bharu on Air Asia.

10No not flying to KL then KB and going back to KL to fly home. I agree the buses will be just as full as the train. Anyone got a link to a bus company so I can book? Or even a bus company name. How long is the trip from Surat to Hat Yai by bus?
I'd rather book a sleeper on the train and even if I paid the extra and booked it from Bangkok it doesn't get get to Surat thani until after midnight and I reckon some one will be fast asleep in our berths by then and there's no way I would wake them to claim my berth.

11You are right if you book from Bangkok and get on at ST you are unlikely to find your berth empty and you would not have any rights to the berth so do not even think about it (see terms and conditions). You could book from Bangkok and then alter the ticket before travel (at least a day ahead) to start from ST and that would be OK

13No idea BUT you can do it at any station in Thailand as long as you do it a day before. I am a little confused as you must be passing somewhere that has a railway station on your way to Koh Pha ngan so why not sort it out then
Otherwise all I can say is turn up at the railway station and take pot luck on the day

14Dumped the train idea. I thought about it and figured I'd find my berth occupied as we get on at Surat thani. The reason I need to book something well in advance is because we need to travel on the 16th of April, which is the day after Songkran, Thai New Year. If you ever travel then and your locked into dates you definitely need to book. It's probably the busiest time of year on the Thai calendar. I've been caught out before doing a "let's travel tomorrow" around the time of Songkran.
