Sri Lanka - honeymoon, beaches, excitement!

Hello all,

Firstly, this site has proved incredibly useful when planning trips in the past. I hope you can help again!

I finally decided to propose to my girlfriend (after a varying degree of hints from her) and we're looking at going to Sri Lanka for our honeymoon.

We plan to go in September, and will fly into Colombo and we want to know where is best to go considering the weather?

Although this is a honeymoon, we both love to travel around and dont want to be sat on the same beach for 2 weeks! We would love to go and relax somewhere away from it all at the end of our trip, but until then we want to go and explore and see stuff!

So what do you guys think?

Also, any news on the Colombo to Galle train?

Budget is not huge, although if we were going to spend more, we would do this at the end of the trip to get a nice, quiet relaxing beach hut.

So I reckon, fly into Colombo, see some key places for 7-9 days and then go and sit and relax for 3-4 days. Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
Month of September is inter monsoon period at south west of Sri Lanka.

Can’t confirm the train from Colombo to Galle on September, at the moment from Hikkaduwa to Matara you can go by train.

But the southern express way is open now. You can go by public bus; start from Maharagama. The moment price is 400/-LKR per person up to Galle.
From the 12th Feb mid night fuel prices are been increased by the Government.
These transport rates might be change in quickly.

The guys think,,,,of your Honeymoon to do in style,,

Day one-Leave for Sigiriya and over night sleeps at Sigiriya. On the way visit Dambulla rock cave temple,
Climb Sigiriya rock and visit Polonnaruwa royal city, over night sleep at Polonnaruwa.
Next day leave for Trincomalee east cost beach at Nilaveli for two nights.
Two days later leave for Kandy and over night stay at Kandy. Evening traditional cultural dancing show
Next morning walk to the Kandy city & visit Kandy temple of the tooth relic of Lord Buddha & visit Elephant orphanage, Peradeniya botanical garden
Mix with local people at Kandy public Market.
Over night stay at Kandy.
Following day go to Nuwara Eliya & visit Ceylon Tea plantation visit tea factory, water falls, St. Clair's fall, Horton plains
Next day from Nanu-Oya to Ella by Train over night sleep at Ella
next visit to safari at Yala National park and at the end to the beach at quiet relaxing beach down south for 3-4 days,,,

We enjoyed the train to Galle, lots to see beside the tracks. In Galle try and find somewhere to stay inside the old fort. We did a home stay thing there and it was really nice. Train up to Kandy is good fun too, be careful of wandering around in the forest up there, gangs of monkeys and gangs of young men scared us a couple of times although nothing bad ever happened. Sigiriya is worth visiting and that is where I would suggest spending a little extra on accommodation. We stayed in a cheap room there and discovered in the middle of the night (by candlelight) that our mattress was very, very infested with the biggest cockroaches I've ever seen in my life. The bottom of the mattress was literally swarming.
