Orkney withou renting a car: possible?

I'm planning to go to Orkney second half of June, with one or two friends.
We are interested not only in Mainland and Ronaldsay, but also in Hoy and Northern Islands.
Do you think it will be necessary to rent a car, or is it possible to use buses? Because on Lonely planet guide they tell about Stagecoach Service only on Mainland and South Ronaldsay.
Thanks.

You can get round Orkney using buses - I have done so.
There's a Hoy bus and on the smaller islands you'll always get a lift.

I went to Orkney for 3 days, I hired a car in Stromness.

The problem with the bus is that unless you time your days around their schedule you will not see as much as you could. With 3 of you I would definitely get a hire car for 2 days on the main island. Well worth it. In 2 days you can do all of the main island, and see most of the cool things there ( and there are lots of them ! )

I did not go to the outer islands, but I would just hire a car for 2 days for the main island, return it and then use public transport ( if there is any? ) or taxis/bikes for the islands,
