Virginia Beach is too far from DC for a day trip.

Did you see the rest of their itinerary?

It's not too far. I did it in college a few times. Well, technically we went from DC to Virginia Beach / Norfolk and then up the Blue Ridge Parkway, but same distance.

Talk about a jam-packed trip. Personally, I would spend all 23 days in NYC. But if you're content with sticking to your plan, I would definitely cut out a few more cities. Miami would be the first to go. After that, I would dump the entire west coast on the chopping; with the exception of maybe Vegas, the Grand Canyon and San Francisco.

All your comments are much appreciated.

Depending on the distances Train, car or plane will all have its own advantages. We will have to plan it accordingly.

It is interesting to see a lot of comments that Miami is not worth it. I had a different perception, I thought it is a must see. Why do you say it sucks and do you think it is not worth it even for a first visit?

I am now convinced we have to skip Dallas, Amarillo and Alb. From Orlando fly to Sante Fe. From Sante Fe we will drive to Flagstaff – Grand Canyon – Las Vegas – LA...

Vinnn, you asked: why Charleston? My plan was to travel from DC to Orlando, but I wanted to stop over to visit Savannah. It is an expensive flight to Savannah due to the taxes, therefore I figured we will fly to Charleston and do a day trip to Savannah. Do you have any other suggestions?

#31--

Four hours plus by the quickest route. It's like doing NY as a day trip from DC. There are many beach towns closer to DC.

Why do you say it {xMiami} sucks and do you think it is not worth it even for a first visit?

I've been one of the people suggesting cutting xFlorida. Not because it "sucks" but because you're spending a lot of money and time to get there for a short visit, when you could spend the same money and time for easier side journeys off other parts of your itinerary and have a better trip overall. You could, for example, substitute xSan Diego. xMiami's a major tourist destination largely because it's the most tropical major city in the U.S. But there are tropical cities near xSouth Africa, so why's that a priority for you? I have the same view re the whole "beach town" discussion above. Why would a xSouth African want to travel all this way to see the xMid-Atlantic's relatively lame beaches?

BTW, I don't think you can fly to xSanta Fe. You can and should fly to xAlbuquerque and take a cheap commuter train from there to xSanta Fe. (Or you can rent a car and drive, but no need to have and pay for a car while in xSanta Fe.)

Include Raleigh and Atlanta on you searches for cheap flights to the Carolinas/Georgia. They're major aiports, and you can drive to the coast from either.
