VAT/GST/Sales tex refund in Malaysia for tourists??Hi all,
I was just wondering if Mayalsia has a sales tax refund process for tourists. In NZ & Australia you can get your Goods and Services Tax back on purchases over $300. At 10-15% of the total price it makes a nice refund when you leave the country. We call the tax GST but I think it is VAT in the UK.
Was just wondering if Malaysia does the same as I am going there in a few weeks and was thinking of buying some electronics.

1No tax refund for tourists. But shops like Parkson do a small refund, maybe 5% if you can take your passport when buying stuff.
Malaysia is no longer particularly cheap for electronics, especially compared to UK.

At this moment there is no VAT or GST on most goods in Malaysia yet. The GST is mostly used on services in restaurants and bars.
There are taxes on specific goods though, like alcohol.
As greenmango mentioned, electronics are probably the same price if not cheaper where you are from, so make sure you know what you're buying.

3Thanks for your replies. Good to know.
Apple i-phone 4S 64gb is approx $864AUD in Malaysia or $999AUD here in Australia. Australia has to be the most expensive country in the world right now!
Not sure if the $135 discount is worth buying it there (no actual Apple store so would have to order online and have it sent to my hotel) but will have a think about it.

6Singapore has this...but there are restrictions. You have to leave Singapore by Air from Changi. http://www.travelfish.org/blogs/singapore/2011/04/27/how-tourists-can-get-a-sales-tax-refund-in-singapore/

Just wanted to let all know that the GST refund is possible in Malaysia. Have just came across with the same issue today and had to do my research. To claim tax refund one needs to:
1) buy eligible staff (clothes, goods, not alcohol, juewelry) for the amount of equal or hgher than 300MR
2) buy the staff from the approved shopping outlet
3) the rest works similar to how it works in the UK, US, etc. (buy, fill out the form, show passport)
4) you have to depart only by air to be eligible for tax refund
for more info go to: www.gstmalaysia.org
Thought, it would be helpful to know.
