driver/hustler to avoid

Just returned from a 2 week trip in Egypt. Wanted to give people a heads up about a driver that some of the hotels/hostels use.

I booked with Meramees hostel and arranged pick up from the airport. His name is Mina, and he is very good at talking you into things you have no interest to buy or see. I don't hold the hostel responsible. The guys were quite concerned when I told them of my experience.

I am well travelled, but was vague about prices in Egypt now (since the revolution) and arranged a trip to Giza with him for a fair price. However, he insisted on taking me to perfume shops, papyrus shops, rip-off restaurants (no way a meal in a dusty garden should cost 80 Eg. pounds each!), insisting on a horse and guide at the pyramids, etc. I said no I didn't want to go, or see, or buy many times, but he wouldn't listen and just gave the usual "It's just to look. You don't have to buy". I became quite insistent, but he just kept at it. As a solo female I felt it best to not get into a huge fight with him. Lesson learned, and no serious harm done, but I hope other travellers don't give him their business.

Anytime you take a cab for the day, it's very important to tell the guy from the beginning that you are not interested in stopping at any shop. You must make it very clear. Should the taxi driver stop in front of a shop despite your telling him not to, simply refuse to get out of the car. They will give up when they realize you mean it.
