Does anyone know about visa on arrival and around how much it costs?
Is the transport between these borders difficult? The LP only briefly explains it and I have read on the forum that it is tricky, however there isn't much recent information.
We are trying to get to Hanoi on the 16th of February for our flight back on the 18th but would we possibly need to give it an extra day in case transport options are not clear or are problematic?
Also are there any problems at this border crossing? In the LP it says there are issues with the Laos-Vietnam border crossings, but not mentioning this one in particular- some more opinions would be helpful about this one.
Thanks in advance!

Today you can directly go to Thanh Hoa & Ha Noi with one booking at "Xam Neua southern bus station" as below.
*Direct bus from Xam Neua to Thanh Hoa---required time: 9.5-10 hours (i.e.Xam Neua 08:00am～Thanh Hoa 17:30-18:00pm/180,000Kip=22.5 USD)/Dep.time: 08:00am from Xam Neua southern bus station(hill top)=Phoutanu bus station=1 km south(ascend road) of touristy area and this direct bus passes through Xam Neua eastern bus station after leaving southern bus station before going to Nam Xoi Lao border/Arrival point in Thanh Hoa is "Thanh Hoa western bus station" then to Lien Tinh B/S(main) along NR.1. This direct bus going to Thanh Hoa is now daily service.
*Direct bus from Xam Neua to Ha Noi---required time: 13～14 hours （i.e. Xam Neua 08:00am～Ha Noi around 22:00pm (bus going to Ha Noi is the same bus going "to Thanh Hoa")---300,000Kip=37.5 USD)/Dep.time: 08:00am/ Dep.point:Xam Neua southern bus station=Phoutanu bus station/Arrival point in Ha Noi is "Ha Noi Giap Bat"=Ha Noi southern bus station, 8 km south of Old Quarter and along NR.1.
Direct bus going to Ha Noi is not daily but on Sun, Mon, Wed, Fri (Xam Neua 08:00am -"Ha Noi Giap Bat" around 22:00pm)
Above direct bus is now operated by Vietnamese bus company "Quang Ninh Reliable Transportation Company" and before leaving Xam Neua southern bus station, every morning bus crews(driver and money collector) take breakfast at a Vietnamese restaurant & cafe "Yen Linh" on the way to Xam Neua eastern bus station(=Nathong bus station near the Nathong airport, 3 km from city center) then go to southern bus station for picking up passengers and confirming the number of passengers who book at the bus station, after that one more time return to this Yen Linh restaurant before heading to the border so we can also take this direct bus here. The distance of Nam Xam bridge near the monumental tower in city center and this "Yen Linh" Vietnamese restaurant is about 700m on the way to Xam Neua eastern bus station(Yellow colored Bia Lao sign board "Yen Linh" is standing at the left side of the road).
Ticket price of "Ha Noi(300,000Kip) -Thanh Hoa (180,000Kip)" = 120,000Kip is abnormally expensive though the cost of minibus(many) from Thanh Hoa to Ha Noi that runs on NR.1 costs avaragedly 60,000-70,000VND(3-4 USD) but i don't know the reason why/about 3.5-4 hours to Ha Noi ----so you can catch it very easily at a pick up point on NR.1.
This route via Nam Xoi/Na Meo border was indeed "uncomfortable route" before concerning paying bus fare and negotiataion for it but it's not now but in the past when taking it on the way(=not starting point but at border town, Thanh Hoa in reverse) without buying ticket because of unresonable overchargings and agressiveness to foreign travellers by bus crews comparing with other routes though scenery is very good, especially at Lao side, but now "if we buy ticket at the bus station", we can 100% avoid those kind of conflictions and even if you were "a female solo traveller", you can travel safely with no confliction and useless anxiety, but "please surely buy ticket at the bus station" for it.
VOA is not avalable at the border for entering into VN (to the contrary, avalable for entering into Laos) as other post is saying.
(i got above recent informations at LPB & Xam Neua etc Oct, 2011 when i travelled there)
PS) if you go to Ha Noi via Xam Neua----,
There are 2 bus routes from Vientiane to Xam Neua and there exist daily bus services for them.
----①from Vientiane (newly built VTE northern bus station) to Xam Neua via Phonsavan
----②from Vientiane ( - do - ) to Xam Neua via Luang Prabang & Nong Khiaw
Both routes are very long journey but you can surely reach to Xam Neua because both of them are daily service and breaking up your journey at some point is of course avalable and better if you have enough time for it.
*above ① route---Vientiane to Xam Neua via Phonsavan---170,000K / 09:30am, 12:00 & 190,000Kip/14:00pm(AC bus)
*above ② route---Vientiane to Xam Neua via Luang Prabang & Nong Khiaw ---170,000Kip /Dep.07:00am(arrive Xam Neua: next morning at 08:00-10:00am)
*Vientiane to Xam Neua via Phonsavan by bus---about 18-19 hours
*Vientiane to Xam Neua via Luang Prabang by bus---about 26 hours
*Vientiane to Luang Prabang by bus---about 10 hours
*Luang Prabang to Xam Neua by bus ---13～14 hours/Dep. 08:30am/130,000Kip from LPB "northern" bus station, besides that bus coming from VTE that stops at LPB "southern" bus station is at around 18:00-19:00pm, stops at Nong Khiaw is at around 21:00-23:00pm in front of restaurants near the bridge over Nam Ou river at Xam Neua side)
*Phonsavan to Xam Neua---about 7 hours by bus/Dep.08:00am/60,000Kip from Xieng Khouang bus station, 4 km from touristy area.
