Bush Walks in KrugerHello!
I am in the process of planning a trip to Kruger in June/July. I was reading about the Wilderness trails in the Lonely Planet South Africa book and was wondering if anyone had any experience with them? If so would you recommend them? Is it worth the 3 days? The two main ones that caught my eye are the Napi Trail and the Sweni Trail, however I am open to the other 5 as well:) Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

1I've only done short bush walks in KNP, but would think the multi-day treks are amazing. Even just for a few hours, getting away from the road and being aware that you're not the top animal in the area is a very special feeling. Book early. Search SA's Getaway magazine for articles on Kruger treks: http://www.getaway.co.za. June/July is cold in the bush, bring layers!

2Over the years I have been on a number of those trails and I thoroughly enjoyed them.
On most of them one does not see as many animals as you would from a vehicle, as animals hear you and smell you and are long gone long before you know they are anywhere nearby. However, if you are very lucky you could well walk into various species including the more dangerous ones.
The base camps are tented and you spend the nights at camp and go out on walks during the day - how often and for how long you walk will depend on the group and on the ranger. The walks need not be strenuous. You may start walking from the base camp or the ranger may drive you to a spot some distance away and then you walk from there.
The one I enjoyed most was the Sweni trail as we saw a wide variety of animals and birds on that trail.
But the trails are very popular and are booked out well in advance. June and July are the most popular months and at this stage you would be very lucky if you were to find a place on any of the trails for that period. If you do find a place available take it - do not worry about which trail it is - they are all worthwhile.
I have just checked the availability and see that during June and July there are only two single places still available on the Sweni trail - one on the trail beginning 10th June and one on the trail beginning 18th July. The Napi trail also has very little available. Get onto the Sanparks web-site now and check the availability at http://www.sanparks.org/parks/kruger/tourism/activities/wilderness/default.php
