A couple of the example stories reminds me of the time coming back from Bermuda when I went through the pre-clearance.
I had declared my alcohol, but forgot the couple danishes I was carrying (in my hand, no less; I can be forgetful like that). The agent asked me what was in the bag, and I remembered. Nicely, she wrote it on my form and let me go.

I never get real specific. For example,I will just write souvenirs, clothes, coffee, jewelry and put an approximate amount for each category. Never have been asked to be more specific going through US customs.

Also, if you didn't spend a lot of money, they generally aren't interested in you. One time, they let me through despite a salad dressing stain on my form.
