first time diver

I am a first time diver and would like to dive in the Red Sea while I am in Egypt. It looks like Dahab is the best place to start. Does anyone recommend a certain dive school? I am assuming a 4-day open water PADI certification course is best? Is there any benefit to doing the classroom portion online, or does it just add cost? Thanks!

Do the whole course when you are there, it'll work out cheaper (and it's more fun studying in the sunshine!)

I can recommend Shams Dive Centre, attached to Shams Hotel. I dived with Ahmed who runs it last year and he and his team are brilliant. Enjoy!

We stayed at the Red Sea Relax Resort. There were a lot of happy divers staying there. I can't vouch for the scuba diving, as I only snorkel. I noticed that it has the National Geographic dive course.

Red Sea Relax is a good, safe, fun outfit with nice people running it.
As is Sea Dancer...http://www.seadancerdivecenter.com/Home.html

We dived with Sea Dancer when we were there last year and I would recommend them. They are managed by an English guy and are very safety conscious. We were asked to demonstrate our buoyancy control on the first dive and the kit was immaculate. I didn't do any training with them but I imagine they would be very good. Good prices too. We looked at some other dive centres that seemed to be much more lax.

Ditto Red Sea Relax. Friend of mine who runs dive operation in Aqaba goes over to Dahab several times a year to give their dive leaders and instructors advanced courses. He's excellent, so I know his students are well trained. We dived with Bedouin Divers last year, and they ran a course. Mostly we dived with them because we wanted the T-shirt

More snorkelling gear; don't see any scuba tanks. They're great for new, 200, they're just plain annoyingly "over protective". We had one day extra on our way to Hamata, and they were adequate.
