Cash in Rio over CarnavalHello all,
I've tried to search for information regarding my questions but to no avail...
I understand the banks are closed in Rio over easter, but presumably atms will still be operating? Also I've heard stories of the atms running dry over this period, should be be stockpiling enough cash to last me over the bank holiday or is this an exageration?

1Your subject line says Carnaval but your text says Easter. Banks are closed on Easter Sunday and perhaps Good Friday. I believe banks will be closed for most of the official Carnaval days, but ATMs will, of course, be open (and many of those are not in banks; I use Banco 24 ATMs in shopping malls since it's one system that accepts my Citibank card). As in the U.S., ATMs are open during hours banks are not. I've also wondered about ATMs running out of cash after several days, but have never experienced it happening.

2It does happen, at least in Salvador but usually at the most popular spots or in areas where there is a limited number of ATMs. Generally you can just find another one. I've seen them being refilled over peak holiday periods like carnaval too. Not everyone is on holiday.
