1After flying in to Sharm, we did not pay the 15$ US Egyptian visa fee in Jan 2011, for travel outside the Sinai .
We visited St Catherines from Dahab by car, and were not required by the police manning the road blocks to have had any type of visa.
If you dive the wreck of HMS Thistledown, or dive in the Ras Mohammed marine reserve, your dive boat will ask if you have an Egyptian visa.

3@ #2 sorry, but this is NOT true. Although the stamp is called a Sinai visa, it is only valid on the east side of the peninsula (from Taba to Sharm) AND St. Catherine, but not anywhere beyond that. So you can't go to El-Tor on it from Sharm or visit Wadi Feiran from St. Catherine...
If you go to St. Catherine via Dahab and back the same way, you'll only need a Sinai visa.

El-Tor is the capital of the South Sinai governorate, which is in... Sinai!
Which you said you needn't to get a visa for...
Which is not true...
There are two ways to get to St. Catherine:
One via El-Tor and Wadi Feiran (west route) for which you need a full Egyptian visa;
One via Dahab (east route) for which the "Sinai-visa" is sufficient.
