Hostels in Nz can be very far from 'roughing it' - look at bbh.co.nz for info and reviews. If this is winter be aware that you'll have short days and icy roads in places, and 2 weeks is really a bit tight for both NZ islands.

For Australia, try to stick with the YHAs - avoid the big hostels if you like sleep.

+ Great Barrier Reef,Ayres Rock,Sydney+
three of the most expensive places in Australia. How much have you budgeted for?

YHAs in NZ are pretty good too. double rooms with bathrooms - but can sometimes cost as much as a cheap motel, which would include a kitchenette and lounge.

Two weeks in NZ I would stick to one island, and usually would suggest the south island, depending where you're from.

It's reasonably easy to get cheap flights from Aus to Christchurch. Less easy to get cheap-ish (cheap does not exist) flights direct to Queenstown, but can be done if booking far enough in advance.

baaa. bit of a sheep shot there, phi.

there are plenty of sheep in central Otago, mind.

And I'll be there myself in a couple of weeks :-)

ET make it clear that there is no connection between my last two sentences.

@Lisa..never mind the sheep, I'd swap them for some fine Otago wine.

I assume you want to rough it a bit and stay In hostels as per your original post.
Hostel - budget from AUD$30 per person per night.
Getting between places - bus would be cheapest then train then plane. What's your itinerary?

Sounds like a great trip. Suggests June as the time to hit Darwin and Uluru (was Ayers Rock but we have to show respect to the indigenous people wishes now - so name change) so that it is not so hot. June being our winter - that might out a spanner in the works for your plans for the Great Barrier Reef if you want to snorkel and/or dive.

Alternative time could be Sept/Oct - warmer in QLD and possibly not too warm in Central Australia.

Time-wise --- If you can afford it, fly (book early with Jetstar or Virgin) as this will afford you more time in each place. It's a big country, Australia.

Happy travels.
