15For the worse you are so right ! And the typical tourist that Thailand attracts has changed for the worse also. A very good reason to avoid them. They tend to attract nothing but trouble that one way or another will come you way. Just pick any tourist slum and within eyesight you should notice the numerous alcoholics, criminals on the run, and other trailer trash that this once beautiful attracts. Sure the booze companies, bars, mafia and dodgy scam artists love it. So many here are so out of it one way or another theres free money just falling out of their pockets. But its now gone beyond that with numerous daily beating and murders. The thais have finally had their fill of us and i can,t blame them.

22It's a person to person opinion, but based on my experience having travelled to both, I would personally take Thailand over Indonesia without even thinking twice.
Also, I think if you are travelling solo you will meet many many more people around Thailand as opposed to Indonesia - With the exception of Bali of course.

26Hi, I may be a bit late to chime into this post but thought I'd try and help too. Although I know you're not planning on visiting Laos, Vietnam or Cambodia I just wanted to let you know I came across a huge number of solo female travellers last June. I was also travelling by myself and a little worried but it was reassuring there were so many of us out there. (but not too many)
I did also visit Thailand but was with my husband. I'm 29 years old and have to agree with the above comments. There is a ridiculous number of backpackers either on drugs or drunk in the major tourist areas and it can definitely become too much. However, for when you visit in September keep in mind that you can avoid these major areas. You can visit Koh Phangan but avoid the parties by staying in the north etc.
Indonesia should be plenty of fun too though. Apparently Lombok is the 'in' destination at the moment, so keep that in mind.
Have a great time and definitely read up on the scams before you go :)
