Anyone recently travelled Guate City to Managua (or Leon) by bus?
In a week I'm flying into Guatemala City for what will be my third trip. However, I have suddenly the urge to expand my horizons and have thus been studying the Nicaragua forum. It sound like a place I'd enjoy very much.Flights down are looking pricey so I'm wondering if someone can recommend a tolerable means of getting from Guatemala City to Leon (or Managua if necessary) directly by bus: a reputable company.
And for those who have experienece of both countries, how does the cost of living compare (very roughly)?
I have a month available, but in order to return home (NZ) I'll need to fly up to Mexico City. Unfortunately Interjet does not fly into Managua so if anyone knows of a comparable budget airline into Mex City, I'd be grateful.
Many thanks for any tips
Cheers

You also might want to look into flying into Liberia CR (LIR) for Nicaragua as its only 2 hours south of Nicaragua border with busses every 30 minutes from Liberia to border. Another option is San Jose (SJO), and catch a Tica bus or King Quality bus to Managua, its 6 hours from SJ to border and then another 2 hours to Managua.Local airlines serving the region are TACA and Copa.

as you said, the flights are pricey, buses are way cheaper. i actually took king quality from guate city down towards managua, got off in esteli. they also have one that does not spend the night in san salvador and drops down and goes along the coast and goes through leon. check out both tica and king quality websites. tica is cheaper and i took them back up to guatemala from nicaragua.you mentioned wanting a cheap flight back to mexico city, there are none. but you could take tica bus from managua to tapachula, border town in mexico, and they are fairly reasonable flights inside mexico but the name escapes and i have never used them.
