North or South Vietnam for 6 days/5 nights?

Hi all,

We will be traveling to Vietnam in late February for 5 days/6 nights, and then flying to our long-term destination in China.

Should we fly into Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi? Because we'll only have 5 days, I figure we will stick to either the "North" or "South." Where would be better to spend our 5 days, and what must-sees do you suggest we check out?

Truly appreciate your time and advice. Thanks!

North since its the most interesting and its closer to China. 6 days would be enough for Hanoi and Sa Pa and possibly Ninh Binh also.

The North of Vietnam is stunning BUT it is very cold in February ; 10-12 degrees C in Hanoi and it can go down to zero in Sapa, which is at 1500 m altitude. Moreover, it is often very foggy in the mountains. Therefore, I would recommend strongly to go South

Thank you both for your advice.

I absolutely want to check out North Vietnam, especially Halong Bay and Hanoi, but I think maybe on this trip the South might be better. I definitely want to come back to Vietnam and do the trip proper (1 month plus)

What places in or near Ho Chi Minh would you suggest?

If you're coming back for a month why go there for 6 days now? If you go to Saigon the only place worth visiting is the Delta. Maybe the Cao Dai temple or Mui Ne if you want some beach time. Nothing much to see in Saigon itself and certainly not worth flying to Vietnam for.

In The North Ninh Binh is certainly worth a visit.
Saigon has basically ...0 ...to offer!

I guess temps are relative to what you're used to. Last Feb. temps in Hanoi felt mild to me (day time highs of 15-19 C) with only a light jacket needed. Don't let the weather be the determining factor.

Yes, I live in the Northeast of the United States, so 15 - 19 c wouldn't be too big of a deal. I don't mind cold weather, but is it usually foggy and/or rainy in North Vietnam during late February?

And another question, and one I asked elsewhere, do you all think I'd be better off spending those 5 or 6 days in Thailand where I will be beforehand (instead of going to Vietnam at all)? I completely understand that longer is better in Southeast Asia, and if I had an ideal situation I would stay for a month in each country. But I don't and I'm not sure when I will.

I know only 5 days in Vietnam isn't much, but I just really want to see a little bit of both countries while I still can.
