Dutch backpacker escapes alligators on Phillip Island!A 24-YEAR-OLD Dutch backpacker has been rescued after getting lost in a swamp hours before her planned trip to see Phillip Island's famous fairy penguins. Margot Rijk, who had arrived in Australia on holiday only 10 days earlier, had decided to take a stroll along the island's northern beach before her organised tour to the penguin parade.
But as Saturday evening settled in she took a wrong turn on the various footpaths around the beach and soon found herself trudging through water and mud.
"I yelled a lot but no-one could hear me,'' she said. "I thought I could find the path but I just got lost.''
The water was soon up to her knees; the sun began to set. Already frightened, Ms Rijk panicked when she heard some kind of creature swimming towards her. Ms Rijk climbed up a nearby tree amid fears an "alligator" was about to attack her.
A Victoria Police helicopter was dispatched and as the chopper neared, Ms Rijk frantically waved her mobile phone screen at the sky, hoping the rescue crew would see it.
Ms Rijk is now continuing her backpacking trip around the country, but she says she's learned an important lesson from her frightening experience.

4I want to know what she has learnt from her experience?
oh reading the article, she learnt to not go out on her own.... Didn't she also learn there are no alligators in Australia, or Crocodiles that far south. Far more likely to be a long extinct thylacine that swam from tassie :-)

When I ventured into the wilds of Mexico I expected to be accosted by mice dressed in peasant costume and yelling - Arriba!!! Arriba!!! at every turn.

9Well I did ask an Austrian in Austria, where are the kangaroos. They generally don't find it funny any more.

10Odd that this should happen to someone from the Netherlands. Aussie wild animals usually prefer the higher fat content of American tourists.
