Passport, bank cards and insurance are essential. My mp3 player is one of the first things I pack too.

Everything else can be bought on the road.

safety pins, a mini-sewing kit, and/or duct tape.

glue sticks are great if you keep any sort of paper journal-- we glued ticket stubs and things like that.

baby wipes & hand sanitizer are good for when there's no time/place for washing.

Swiss army knife, sarong, a small roll of sticky tape and a spare pair of bootlaces. All these have multiple uses.

  • head torch great for sleeper bus/trains
  • duck tape - fixes all sorts
  • good walking sandals- much easier than wandering in flip flops in big cities
  • netbook & external hard drive (watch movies & to backup pics) been a necessity for us over a year to write blog and research and plan stuff there is free wifi in most places
  • a small travel pillow its been priceless on many a journey I got one that fits in a ball off amazon that we just hang from our daypacks

not needed so far that we brought

  • sleeping bag liner we aint stayed anywhere that bad
  • mosquito net - anywhere of concern had nets already

A small rubber football (American). Sometimes it can be a bitch to find a pump, but it provides hours of fun and always makes new friends, especially women, they love a guy who can throw a long pass or make a great catch. Also a small bottle of quality cologne, I use Acqau Di Gio, it's like fishing with dynamite. Don't leave home without my Iphone4...
